4.0 out of 5 stars get your torch and light up your cohiba
i picked up this book wanting to know more about cigars. this book did not disappoint. it was very informative and useful. the photography was excellent, so excellent, in fact, that looking at all those stogies made my mouth water. so sit down with a nice glass of cognac, a nice cuban, and read "The Cigar".

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice little book
I picked this up at a local library sale for $5. Published in 1996, "The Cigar" is a great coffee table book or awesome for the smoke den. It has nice anecdotes, quotes, and some good history of the cigar. It's absolutely perfect for casual reading and the beginner. You could easily tear through the whole book with two Chruchills.

However, much of the book...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that actually understands Cigar Cuisine!, April 7, 2003

There are tons of cigar books out there, but this is the first I've found that actually explains how to cook with cigars. The rest of the book is great of course, wouldn't expect any less from Conrad, but the recipes are really where it starts to shine above the others. Unfortunately there is no mention of the cigar burrito (one of my personal favorite dishes), but all of the dishes I've tried have been great. This will definitely give those who complain about the "smell" of cigars something to complain about! To quote the note that came on the cover when this book was given to me, bon appetit.

This book is a great addition to any cigar enthusiasts book collection. It is a short, enjoyable read that has wonderful illustrations and pictures. It is filled with fun facts and takes a light approach to educating the reader on all the intricacies of the world of cigars. I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in learning more about cigars or just wants to further enhance their library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice little book, October 6, 2009

This review is from: The Cigar (Hardcover)
I picked this up at a local library sale for $5. Published in 1996, "The Cigar" is a great coffee table book or awesome for the smoke den. It has nice anecdotes, quotes, and some good history of the cigar. It's absolutely perfect for casual reading and the beginner. You could easily tear through the whole book with two Chruchills.

However, much of the book does feel lazyily written. It seems that the author did a search for cigar quotes and then book-ended them with short (but solid ) essays of the history of the cigar and women in cigars and finally slapped on a nice little section on how to choose a cigar. Many times, the writing merely lists famous people who smoked cigars and then follows up "(famous person) would smoke x cigars a day and lived to be (ripe old age)," or "(famous person) could be counted on working with a cigar in his mouth." Of course he could. It's a cigar book. I would have liked to see more detail in these people's lives and their cigar habits, but that's what a lot of this book lacks: detail.

If you're a cigar book collector, it's a must have. If you're looking to seriously expand your knowledge of cigars and their production, there are many other books out there that have much more complete information and are still available.
