The Perfect Adriana, October 22, 2002

It doesn't get any better than this. Adriana is a perfect vehicle for Ms. Scotto at the peak of her vocal and artistic career. She floats pianissimi all evening long, but has all the vocal heft and spinto you could ask for in this quintessential verisimo work. Aaragal is also wonderful, he manages to bring a real French quality to his voice and is a sensuous Maurizio. He and Ms. Scotto sing with a line that we just don't hear anymore. Obratsova is nothing short of thrilling. A great chest voice, spectaular mezzo top, and and dramatic intensity make her one of the great princesses on record. Taddei is also perfect as the Michonet that will give you several lumps in your throat - certainly with his "Bravo, Bravissimo" monolog. Superb comprimario singers finish off this incredible cast. Last, but not least, is Gavazzeni conducting the opera with passion, energy, and making it a true verismo experience - ah those harp and celeste parts still ring in my ears. This performance was live from San Francisco Opera in 1977 - one the company's best seasons ever. This will be a treasure in your collection -
