Very big! Very Heavy!,

I wanted Granite because it's not going to chip or crack like others. This thing is really heavy, almost too heavy to move for a weakling like me (about 14 pounds). I would recommend putting a mat underneath to protect your table. The outside is polished or has an epoxy coating. The pestle is also polished. The pestle seems a little too short for how deep the mortar is. The grinding area of the mortar and pestle is slightly ribbed. I highly recommend using some uncooked rice to grind in it to clean out the grit. I can grind a quarter cup of uncooked rice in this to a fine powder in about 10 minutes. I was hoping that the taller walls would help keep stuff from flying out, but it doesn't. It does make it a bit easier to grind though. The pestle is heavy enough so you don't need to apply much force when grinding.
Another thing is that this is made in Germany.

With the description of the product, I knew it might not be as deep as I wished, but it is not even close! The inside diameter is 5 inches at the top, and the total height of the mortar is 5 inches, but the inside depth is only 2 1/2 inches--not suitable for Thai curry pastes, or probably much else.

Husband is the cook. He LOVES it. But he is a true foodie, passionate and hard working, so note that this is a grinder not for the faint hearted. It needs a protective wood stand on our granite counter top or they would grind each other into oblivion. It keeps the seeds inside due to tall sides, and grinds beautifully. It does a great job with the slushy garlic-based mixes, but I would still use the Jamie Oliver shaker in preference for those jobs myself (as my arms are not strong enough to handle this monster). Ultimately, if you are serious enough about food and strong enough to man up to the task, then you will love this rugged beauty in your kitchen.
