Book Description

April 15, 1999
A Cinderella Affidavit is a pulse-pounding legal thriller by newcomer Michael Fredrickson, a lawyer in charge of prosecuting other lawyers for the state of Massachusetts.

A routine drug raid goes awry in Boston's Chinatown, killing a police officer as he batters down the door to execute a no-knock search warrant. The cops arrest and charge a man with the crime, but the court orders them to produce the confidential snitch whose information, recounted in a police affidavit, was the basis for the warrant. Danny Leung, the small-time Chinese hustler who supplied the cops with the information needed to pull off the raid, hires corporate attorney Matthew Boer to help him evade the cops. Danny is soon on the run and Matt must battle politicians, the Chinese mob, and even the firm he calls home if he hopes to save his client.

Amazon.com Review

If the legal details of this exciting, highly literate first thriller ring unusually true, attribute it to the fact that author Michael Fredrickson is general counsel to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers, (the lawyers' version of the police's Internal Affairs Division). He says in a preface that the book tracks the events of an actual murder, and the "Cinderella affidavit" in question--a phony document designed to get a search warrant--comes almost word for word from that case. But all these details would make for dull reading if Fredrickson didn't present them with the wit and skill of a veteran novelist.

When a simple drug bust in the Chinatown section of Boston goes wrong and a cop is killed, attorney Matt Boer--appointed by the court to defend one of the Chinese dealers--uncovers the bogus affidavit and begins to look into a police cover-up. Meanwhile, the other cops involved in the drug bust start to come apart at the seams, slipping into alcoholic and even psychotic behavior to hide some other dark secrets. Boer, a corporate lawyer with little criminal experience, screws up his client's case, but he gets a second chance to redeem himself by helping to unravel all the other tangled connections in the case.

Fredrickson might have dropped one too many chunks of meaty legalese into his hearty stew, but that's a lot easier to savor than the thin broth of most first thrillers. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly

Extraordinary quantities of detail, both local and legal, distinguish this ambitious, complex legal thriller set in Boston. After a police officer is killed during a drug bust in Boston's Chinatown, attorney Matt Boer discovers that the police acted on "a phony affidavit signed by a narcotics officer to get a search warrant"Athe Cinderella affidavit of the title. When a client of Boer's reveals connections to the Chinatown gunfight, Boer breaks rules to investigate what looks like a police coverup, not only of the affidavit but also of an empty briefcase that made its way from the crime scene to police inventory. Revelations of further deceptions mount. The dead officer's increasingly alcoholic partner progresses from shaky driving to full-blown hallucinations while trying to keep the affidavit secret; he also starts an affair with a woman whose name he often forgets. And Boer's law firm reveals connections to political wranglings at the DA's office, and to the complex and dangerous dealings of Chinese gangs. First-time author Fredrickson is general counsel to the Massachusetts Board of Bar OverseersAthat is, he's the lawyer for the folks who check out complaints against lawyers. He packs the narrative with details from case law, and with facts from real cases: the opening chapters "track the main events of [an actual] murder," a preface informs us, and the central affidavit "is taken almost verbatim" from that case. Such chunks of nonfiction add texture to the story, though sometimes they are slightly distracting. On the whole, however, Fredrickson's insight into the legal process adds authenticity to a fast-paced. intriguing, multi-faceted tale. 75,000 ad/promo. (May) FYI: Fredrickson was among the authors interviewed in PW's feature on first novelists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Cinderella Affidavit (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Fredrickson's book. The plot, though based on a fairly recent real-life incident, is highly fictionalized and is just the jumping-off point for Mr. Fredrickson's book.

Indeed, the very fact that, in the novel, the Massachusetts Bar Counsel even considers investigating and, perhaps, recommending discipline against the book's principal character, a lawyer in a large Boston firm, is the clearest indication of the book's fictional nature. Mr. Fredrickson returns closer to real life at the end of the novel when the firm's "bad" partner is allowed to simply retire early.

As a novel, however, the book is a terrific read and I am eagerly looking forward to Mr. Fredrickson's next work. Although I am a Massachusetts lawyer, you do not have to have any background in the law to appreciate this book and enjoy the plot or the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently written, absorbing mystery!!!, May 4, 1999

This review is from: A Cinderella Affidavit (Hardcover)
Although I am only 3/4 of the way thru "A Cinderella Affidavit", I felt compelled to respond to the other review posted by Ms. Griffiths. The author clearly went out of his way to indicate that the book is not intended to be a portrayal of any actual person. This is a standard literary device authors have used for years - to take an actual event and use it solely as the jumping off point to write a compelling story.

And a compelling story is what "A Cinderella Affidavit" is. The book is tightly plotted (no, I haven't figured out the ending yet), has generally well-defined characters, and a strong sense of story-telling. The author does a better job creating lawyers than policemen (which make sense given his background) and creates a real sense of Boston and being part of a law firm (note the interactions with the partners and the Dead Partners Office).

In sone respects, this book is almost too much of a good thing in that the author has so much he wants to tell us. Given that so many mysteries are so much fluff, this is a welcome change.

I have no difficulty recommending this book to anyone who likes a good mystery. I plan to stay up late tonite to finish it and hope that there will be another book from Michael Fredrickson in the not-too-distant future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Literary Crime Novel, August 28, 2000
By
This review is from: A Cinderella Affidavit (Hardcover)
This book has more depth and intrigue than a typical crime novel. The descriptions of life in a modern law firm and in a big city police department ring true. Frederickson clearly has done his research. Unlike lesser versions of the form, Frederickson asks his readers to work: to follow the story and to wrestle with the ethical dilemmas that confront the main character. Although some of the characters on the margins of the story are drawn to type, the central figures are well written and multi-dimensional. At times, I found the plot a bit heavy going and, too often, the author had to resort to long explanations of plot twists. However, the story is anything but predicable, and Frederickson generally keeps the action moving.
