Book Description

Please note: This is a novelette. Flash fiction is a fun and quick read, not a full length novel.

History is told from one person's perspective. Sometimes they don't get it right.

Ugly Stepsister Anna has wrongly been accused of being mean and evil. Now it is time she got the opportunity to tell her side of the story.

With Cinderella so perfect and wonderful, it is no wonder Anna feels ugly in comparison. Dealing with bullies, a grumpy mother and the death of her step-father, Anna is at her wits end.

When the Prince's ball approaches, Anna is told she must find a husband to save the family fortune. Attending with her sisters, the sulky Prince Charming only has eyes for Cinderella.

With the burden of being the only one to unite her step-sister with the Prince, will Anna act as cupid? Or will she protect Cinderella from the arrogant Charming?

A charming twist to the story of Cinderella, told completely from the point of view of the Ugly Step-Sister.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much evil here March 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Cinderella is Evil is a re-telling of Cinderella where Cinderella is not actually evil.

I liked the story but didn't fall madly in love with it. It turns the entire Cinderella story into a series of misunderstandings amongst a family still grieving the loss of their father/step-father/husband. It does keep the general theme of the king hosts a dance to find his son a wife. The prince does find a woman then loses her, the only clue to her identity being a slipper.

This version is told from the perspective of one of Cinderella's step-sisters. A step-sister who has always felt ugly and unnoticed leaving her to envy Cinderella, even as she does love her.

I'm not sure what could have moved this book from okay to great. Maybe if it were longer (this is a novella) and more refined. I was waiting for someone to actually be evil. For drama that didn't seem forced.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot different. January 31, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story was enjoyable, as the original was. Though it was a bit different, kind of replacing the kindness as told by the step-sister, and therefore, making Cinderella the mean one. But it was very deceiving. From the cover of the book and the title, I expected a much more sinister story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept January 4, 2014

Too predictable for me. There was not really much of a search for her husband. Eh it was short and not very good but I loved the idea, although Cinderella didn't really seem evil just well guarded and temperamental. Would have loved a fairy godmother scene however the idea was great and it was still interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ugly is still pretty December 1, 2013

I love how all the characters had a back story even though it was a short read. It gave you a different view of Cinderella because she wasn't her own hero or some ones victim, she was selfish, but just wished for love that was already there.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Evil" Step Sister Gets to Tell Her Side of the Story November 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a cute book. The idea of allowing the step sister to counter Cinderella' s claims is clever.

While no one in the story is really evil, we do see some...unpleasant behavior. In the end it's really more like your typical sibling squabbling. I particularly enjoyed the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, But Okay Book Overall November 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I honestly don't know what to say about this one. It was a tad bit disappointing, which is sad because(as I've mentioned before)I really like fairy tale retellings. This one, though, fell through for me.

I felt the majority of the story was spent sort of explaining away what happened in the original tale, making all that was told from Cinderella's point of view exaggerations, which could've been done without being so obvious. Then, I found the title to be misleading. The Cinderella in this story was rather arrogant/self-righteous and a bit of a drama queen, but she was not evil.
Another thing that bugged me, and I don't consider this a spoiler, is the dress Cinderella received was said to be yellow until the next time it was mentioned in which it was pink. I try to ignore small grammatical errors in novels, but mistakes like this shouldn't be so easily overlooked.

But, overall I did enjoy the book, especially the ending for Anna. Not to mention, despite all the parts I wasn't fond of, I found myself really enjoying Anna as a character. She was well written and I found her to be someone you can relate to in ways(again, despite small annoyances) So, I find that some would find this story very lovely, as it does have its charm. I would read more from Jamie Campbell!

1.0 out of 5 stars Evil is whiny? August 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Extremely short. While reading it, I was reminded more of the movie Ever After than of anything NEW. When I saw the title, I had a vastly different idea of how the story would go and did not expect Cinderella to be a whin-o or Anna to be so capitulating.

I love this book. I love how everyone ended up having a happy ever after and not just Cinderella. But I don't get how the title matches the book though.

Well at least the ugly stepsister got a chance to spill her guts, and tell her (wishful thinking) side of the story. Very predictable. Read more

I agree with other readers the story doesn't show how Cinderella is evil. I do love the twist on the story, showing life from the 'ugly stepsister's' point of view. Read more

More About the Author

Jamie was born into a big, crazy family of 6 children. Being the youngest, she always got away with anything and would never shut up. Constantly letting her imagination run wild, her teachers were often frustrated when her 'What I did on the weekend' stories contained bunyips and princesses.

Growing up, Jamie did the sensible things and obtained a Bachelor of Business degree from Southern Cross University and worked hard to gain her membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Yet nothing compared to writing. Quiting the rat race to spend quality time with her laptop named Lily, Jamie has written several novels and screenplays. Spanning a number of genres and mediums, Jamie writes whatever inspires her from ghost stories to teenage love stories to tantalising murder mysteries. Nothing is off limits.

A self-confessed television addict, dog lover, Taylor Swift fan, and ghost hunter, Jamie loves nothing more than the thrill of sharing her stories.
