Macabre twist to a timeless fairy tale!,
By
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Hardcover)
This book is wonderfully written in a fresh rhyming verse. It is an excellent re-telling of the too well-known story of Cinderella. The illustrations are colorful and over-the-top! Lots of laughs everytime you look closer and see more in the intricate and colorful pictures. Kids of all ages will love this book. It certainly gives a fun and creative spin to a tired old tale. I love the story of Cinderella, but there are not many new ways to tell it. This story proves that theory absolutely wrong! I agree with the observation that the drawings are very Tim Burtonesque. It reminded me of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and yet it has it's very own identity. If you like Halloween or gothic humor, you will love this story.

Boys and Cynical Babysitters Love This One,
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Hardcover)
Reminescent of Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride" this book appeals to adults and older children. Its a sardonic, witty version of the Cinderella story. The illustrations are lush and colorful, but a bit too scary for young children. The text is also too wordy for beginning readers. But the humor and pictures will not be lost on adolescents. I recommend this book for older kids or maybe that slightly morbid 4th grader. Great for anyone who has read the Disney version too many times.
Boys and cynical babysitters love this one.

A Semi-Gothic Fairy Tale,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Hardcover)
Cinderella Skeleton is a great and simple children's book with a setting like a Tim Burton film. Set in a graveyard, Cinderella Skeleton is the classic tale of Cinderella retold with an undead cast of characters. The story is full of wonderful and mildly creepy rhymes and great word choice. An example of the great word choice is, "Her build was long and lean and lank; her dankish hair hung down in hanks." The book offers lots of wonderful illustrations and plenty of interesting twists in the story. One such example is when Cinderella is running away from the prince and instead of her shoe falling off, her whole foot just snaps off. All of the illustrations are wonderful and wonderfully creepy, too. In closing any early or starting reader would love Cinderella Skeleton; it also makes a great book to read out loud to your kids or class, too!
This reveiw writen by a poor child forced to write this for his reading class...who still liked the book even though he's in 7th grade

Good read, Fantastic Illustrations,

I really liked this story. I picked it up from the assortment that the Halloween display had to offer because I liked the artwork on the cover and the title caught me eye. San Souci seems to specialize in Cinderella tales, this certainly is like none other that I have read. Up until mid way it is just a fun perversion of the story, she is still working hard and under appreciated, but then the fun twist happens (As one of the real reviews gave away the whole plot, I won't be spoiling anything). Instead of her loosing a slipper as any normal, decent Cinderella would--this skeleton, near Tim Burton version, looses the bottom half of her leg.
In some ways this seems to bring the actions of her step sisters and other Prince admirerers closer to the original Grimm story. As they too start snapping off their legs. The rhyming verse is light hearted and quick, this isn't a particularly scary book but younger children might not like it as much as the original. Though I think most grade school children would get a real kick out of it--I could see it very successfully being read aloud to a classroom full of children in halloween gear. I love the art in this book, it is both beautiful and ghostly. And yes, very reminicient of Tim Burton's claymation works.

Wonderful Illustrations!,

This book is such a fun twist on the original story, it's really the illustrations which pull you in. The story itself is a fun, rhyming twist on a classic that is very funny. The pictures have a humor all their own!

The kids love it, but personaly I think anyone that likes fairy tales and halloween stuff would enjoy it also. The art is top notch and really captures the mood of the story. It's nice to see Cinderella getting a new, halloweeny, twist to it.

I love this - but it's not NECESSARILY for little ones,

I LOVE this book! I think the illustrations are just about perfect and the twist on the tale is delightful! And my oldest son loves it, too. He giggles right along with me. However.... my youngest son finds it a bit macabre for his taste. The pictures seem to frighten him and when Cinderella loses her foot, well.... that just doesn't sit well with him.
So, as with any children's book, know your audience.... especially those that are easily prone to nightmares.

Macabre fairy tale,
By
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Paperback)
Okay, so Tim Burton and the rest of that crowd has pretty much done this concept, but that does not take away from the cool imagination and sheer showiness of this story--Cinderella in a graveyard. It's a simple, macabre fairy tale told in surprisingly enchanting poetry that captures the spirts of Halloween and Cinderella alike. The true treasure of this book is the eerie illustrations.

We absolutely adore this book!,
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Hardcover)
This is Cinderella with a twist. The setting is a graveyard, and she is a skeleton, but there is nothing creepy about it. The story is written in poetry, and it is beautifully illustrated with watercolors. My son and I love it!

Cinderella Skeleton,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cinderella Skeleton (Paperback)
She was running down the stairs, when her foot fell off. The prince ran after her, but he was too late. Does this sound familiar? Well, it should! This is a creepy and twisted version of Cinderella. Everything in this book revolves around the dead.
Just like in Cinderella, Cinderella Skeleton has an evil stepmother and two evil stepsisters. Lucky for her, her fairy godmother steps in making her dreams come true. She rides in a "hurse" to the ball and falls in love with the prince. Robert D. Son Souci does a great job writing this book. He gives the classic fairy tale a twist, and makes it a little more fun. CInderella Skeleton is well written and a good read aloud for ages 4-7. The lines rhyme and the sentences flow nicely. Kids would really enjoy this book becuase it isn't all princessy and just for girls. Cinderella Skeleton also appeals to boys. |
