I bought this book at one of Jan Bretts first tours this past weekend, ironically, at a poultry show! All of Jan Bretts books are amazing when it comes to the illustrations, and this book is no exception!! The words have a slight variance from the typical Cinderella story which make it even more special. I feel like our own birds are more special now. Lots of glitz, glamor, and bling in this story makes every girl at heart want it. You will not be disappointed! Will make an excellent gift to anyone who loves chickens, fairy tales, and love stories.

TOP 100 REVIEWERon November 20, 2013
Format: Hardcover
“Cinders: A Chicken Cinderella” by Jan Brett is an adaptation of known Cinderella story set in a snowy Russian winter and with chickens as main characters.

Unusual characters and story setting enable young readers to enjoy this comic world of different types of chickens dancing on ball gown in the Ice Palace under a moonlit sky, while all illustrations were beautifully drawn by Brett himself.

Although the Cinderella story is familiar to kids and therefore predictable, the changes Jan Brett made regarding the environment and the main characters together with his detailed illustrations of chicken world, make this edition a nice and interesting book for children that can be recommended.

At first, I was surprised by the pale colors, but, the more I looked and read, the more I fell in love with the story and the beautiful illustrations. It truly was a winter wonderland. Jan Brett's attention to detail causes one to pause and travel on your own voyage in your mind. I loved the experience. The kids in the library loved it, too.

Cinders is the basic Cinderella story with the variations being chickens and a Russian Winter theme.

Jan Brett’s illustrations are magnificent. In the center of the book, there is a large fold out section that shows all the hens and pullets in their costumed finery. You could spend half the evening just looking at these four pages.

Tasha, the young girl in the story, cares for her hens and one evening she is closed into the tower that houses the birds. As she falls asleep, Largessa pulls out an invitation to a ball for Prince Cockerel. Following the same storyline as the original Cinderella, Cinder must get her sisters ready for the evening leaving no time for herself. That is until a beautiful Silkie appears with her magic wand.

The story is quiet familiar, but the phenomenal illustrations are what make the book. Jan Brett is a truly gifted illustrator and even if your young reader is not interest in the story, just let them look at the pages and tell you the story that they see.

Cinders is a fantastic story for anyone who loves chickens and fairy tales. The pictures are exquisite and the story is charming. I got one for myself to keep to read to my grandchildren, and one to give to my Granddaughter Lucy who has just started raising chickens.

Huge fan of Jan Brett and this story is so touching. I love how she uses the animals in her stories in fanciful ways without ever compromising their innate animal characteristics. The silkie fairy godmother is the cutest ever. We used to have one that looked just like her. Wish we could have dressed her up like Jan Brett.

This book was another alternative to Cinderella. Great concept. I recommend this book for K-2 grades so they can see how one particular story can be written using different characters.
