A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cindy's Last Hope (Thoroughbred #54) (School & Library Binding)
I liked this book.Cindy was one of my favorite girls in the series. I wish her old boyfriend Max would not have disappered though. It was not my favorite THOROUGHBRED book, but I liked it.

While I appreciate that the new authors actually remember that there are original characters suchas Cindy, I feel the strange need to write about them in order to stretch out the road to the Kentucky Derby to be grating and dull. Cindy's Last Hope was both of these. There was very little plot line, and there was even less motivation to actually read it. The situation with Champion was highly unrealistic and used as a plot device. Champion is eighteen years old, sold when he was three or six (who knows at this point?), and spent a good long time in Dubai. I think the question of who owns the colt would have come up much earlier, and I'm sure a large body of water such as the Atlantic wouldn't stop the law. The pitiful excuse that Clay Townsend can't be found is ludicrous. There was a line of excuses too long in this book to make the stumbling plot move forward. Concerning Gratis, I'm sure someone could be found to ride the horse besides an exerice rider and an injured ex-jockey. There have always been horses that are hard to handle, and there are always plenty of highly skilled jockeys who can ride them. Why finding a jockey is such an issue in this series is beyond me. Just because the horse bucks a few times and throws a rider doesn't mean the jockey has to have a life bond to the horse in order to ride. Overall, I didn't mind Cindy in this book, but I'm wary as to why they're bothering writing about her. The slow down in this series is disappointing, and the ... attempts at plots are starting to wear thin.

A GREAT BOOK,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cindy's Last Hope (Thoroughbred, No. 54) (Paperback)
It was a great book. I recommend this to any thoroughbred lover, unless you don't like Cindy. The book is mainly about her (and horses). I don't understand why some of you people don't like her. BRAD on the other hand is the most obnoxious person that hit the series. I mean in this book he tries takong Champion (cindy's horse). I won't tell you if he suceeds or not you can find that out for yourself. The other problem in the book is that Cindy and Ben can't find a jockey for Gratis in the Derby. The only one you can keep control of him is an exercise rider called Wolf. But Cindy doesn't like him. Cindy fires him and takes out Gratis on the trails. But hurt her bad shoulder in the process. Who can help her? Will she ever find a jockey for Gratis? Will Cindy lose Champion? Read the Book and find out!

A Really Good Book,

This was a very good book, but not as good as the other Thoroughbred books I have read. This book was a good chance to get to know the character of Cindy McLean because she hasn't been mentioned much in the series. With the Kentucky Derby coming up Cindy is pressured to get a jockey. Christina and Melanie both are riding their own horses, so Cindy doesn't have much choice for a really good jockey, either they can't handle Gratis or the already have rides. Gratis is the most stubborn and untrained horse I have ever heard about. He is pig-headed and tries to throw his rider off at any chance he gets. I can understand Cindy's suffering of not being able to ride because of her shoulder injury. She really wants to race Gratis and she probably could if she could ride. I really enjoyed this book because it showed a side of Cindy I had never seen before. The only thing I would change about it is that it probably needed a bit more action in it, although it did have some. I can't wait to find out who wins the Derby! You should definitly buy this book!

not the best,

This book was dissapointing because it's just another long halt before the derby. it seemes like the derby will never get here. Plus the dissapearences of old characters is encreasingly annoying.

Where is the Derby?,
By Kathy Hawrysz (Western Springs, IL) - See all my reviews

Yet another book to stretch out the time before the derby....Mary Anderson, why? Why did the series suddenly become even more of a soap opera? Really, the character of Brad Townsend is so greatly exaggerated that is borders on the ludicrous. I realize that they are trying to present him as the antagonist and as a flat character that will never change, but honestly! Furthermore, I found Cindy to be infuriating in this novel...the only way she got to be a jockey was having a family in the business and willing to help; yet she can't give Wolf a chance? And didn't she get to ride Glory when she was barely learning? She is taking her frustration at not being able to ride out on Wolf. She is still the insecure, petty, ungrateful child she always was, and will remain.

Not The Best...,

I was really dissapointed with this book. For one thing...Cindy is all ticked off because she can't ride Gratis. She acts as if she can't ride at all. Another thing...she was complaning that Wolf would never ride Gratis because it takes years of experience to ride in the Derby. But remember in book 22? Didn't Cindy ride in the Dubai World Cup after riding in only TWO races? Yes Cindy, it takes YEARS of experience to ride in a world class race. Brad Townsend? Gimme a break! Attitude way WAY to strong. It made me want to rip the book into thosands of pieces. But I guess it's an important book, so you should buy it...only if you have a lot going on around you.
