More About the Author

One of my earliest memories is of sitting in the backyard garden in Minneapolis with a salt shaker while my dad picked perfectly ripe tomatoes hot off the vine. I can still taste the fresh, warm red flesh seasoned with a sprinkling of salt...

My passion for seasonal, farm-fresh flavors has never waned. Through all those years in school, college, training in France, stints in other chefs' kitchens, a transplanting in the West, and all the sweat and tears of running my own restaurants - I'm still just a kid in a tomato patch.

For the past 30 years, I've cultivated gardens and restaurants in California's San Francisco Bay Area, setting deep roots in Napa Valley with Mustards Grill, Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen and my newest sweetheart, Brassica. Helping people create unforgettable celebrations is a natural (and joyful) extension of what we do, and serving as Culinary Partner for the Monterey Bay Aquarium (and their important Seafood Watch program) is a very special honor.

Thanks to the wonderful teams at my restaurants, I've also been able to nurture the part of me that seeks out distant corners of the world, bringing home flavors at once exotic and familiar. I've managed to write five cookbooks - Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook, Fog City Diner, Big Small Plates, Cindy Pawlcyn's Appetizers, and Cindy's Supper Club: Meals from Around the World to Share with Family and Friends - bring the flavors I love to kitchens far and wide.

Each endeavor is distinctly different, and I love them all equally. Just like kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cindy's Supper Club October 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Cindy's Supper Club is one of my favorite cookbooks when i'm looking for something different and delicious to serve to company. I also enjoy her personal comments and the little drawings that accompany most pages. It's the next best thing to having dinner at one of her Napa Valley Restaurants. Nancy

5.0 out of 5 stars This has become one of those 'go to' books for me.... December 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I've cooked loads of recipes from this cookbook and they've all turned out amazingly delicious. And what's really cool is that plenty of these delicious recipes were crazy simple--try the Sake Simmered Salmon in the Japan section! I also love that the book is packed with gorgeous and inspiring photos to get me going on recipes that might be a little out of my comfort zone.

Still more, I like the clear, friendly way the recipes are written, and the interesting culinary facts/fun personal stories that Cindy shares throughout. And I'm really liking the format of complete menus from regions around the world. I can get overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to put together a nice menu from a cuisine with which I am unfamiliar and so sometimes just stick with what I know. This book is helping me to expand my food horizons and I'm loving it! I've given the book to many friends and have had lots of positive feedback. This is probably my new favorite cookbook and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Cindy Pawlcyn! December 9, 2012

Format:Hardcover
I love this latest cookbook treasure trove from Cindy Pawlcyn! It's full of recipes for those of us who want to try our hands at creating new and exciting dishes for our families and friends.
Kudos to Ten Speed Press for formatting the book in such a visually-pleasing way. I've made several of the Indian recipes (cucumber raita and a cauliflower-potato dish) and loved them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dede October 18, 2012

Format:Hardcover
I love Cindy Pawlcyn's new cookbook. It is filled with delicious recipes, great pictures, delightful drawings and wonderful stories. Even if I didn't cook any of the recipes, I would find it an interesting read. But I have made several of the recipes and they were delicious and spot on. There are many more that I want to try and this book will be a great resource for my next dinner party. This is not a "cookie cutter" cookbook but a very unique and colorful tome.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little odd September 9, 2012
By MaraD
Format:Hardcover
This cookbook just seems odd to me. I like the organization -- she breaks it up into areas of the world and then countries from each area. So, there's the Americas, Europe, Africa & the Middle East, and Asia. However, the recipes that she chooses from each country don't seem especially representative of that country's cuisine and, even worse, many just don't look or sound appetizing. I have friends and in-laws from India, Greece, and France and I was disappointed that the delicious dishes I've enjoyed from these cultures are no where to be found in this book.

It's also odd to me that some of the recipes are extremely authentic calling for chiles or mushrooms that would require a trip to an ethnic grocery store while others are fusion-style recipes combining flavors and techniques from multiple cultures. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I recommend checking this one out at a bookstore or the library before committing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed January 3, 2013
By jcb
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking forward to this release because I have enjoyed her other cookbooks as well as trips to her restaurants. I find this collection of recipes disappointing, though. Beyond that, I really hate the design choices that were made in the production of the book. I find the recipes not easy to read because of the font and color choices--there are very few white pages in the entire book. Just strangely unappealing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Heads Up September 23, 2012

The previous assessment (MaraD) is totally on the mark. This is a strange, unappealing, untrustworthy, inauthentic mess of a cookbook.
