Taking a page from `50s crooner Julie London, `30s style jazz, and the `60s chanteuse tradition, Lily Frost is a rare bird from Canada's musical woods. Cine-Magique, her fourth solo offering, is emotional and enchanting. Produced by her husband Jose' Miguel Contreras (of By Divine Right), Cine-Magique takes a minimalist direction, with flourishes of musical magic realism and cinematic dimensions. Songs from Cine-Magique have recently been featured in episodes of ABC's Grey's Anatomy and FX's The Dirt.

Lily Frost's Cine-Magique album is a great collection of swing style songs. Her terrific voice comes out especially when there is minimal instrument backing. My favourites are Je Revienrai, a French love song; Pacha Mama with its distinctive drumming; Psychic Cat Song with guitar accompaniment; The Priscillas' Song from the '60s and Enchantment. Enchantment featured in the CBC TV series "Being Erica" and Lily of course sang the title music for the series, which contains songs of some great artistes and gives full music credits at the end of each episode.

Lilly Frost tries a lot of different styles and they all work. She has a great voice and writes wonderful witty lyrics. The production and playing are first rate. If you were disappointed by the new Goldfrapp album, give this one a try.
