Not only does master guitarist Gary Lucas do justice to a series of musical themes from various films (Casino Royal, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Psycho, et. al), he also includes several original pieces that blow the roof off with their finger-picking excellence, their thematic wizardry, and their deep, high, and varied melodic/harmonic improvisations. To cite only three — J'accuse, Vertigo, and especially Entr'act, a 20-minute masterpiece performed live. I eagerly look forward to exploring this guitarist's extraordinarily music further.

A LABOR OF LOVE FROM A REAL CINEASTE. In some form or another, this album must have been in gestation ever since Gary laid down some tracks from his long-running GOLEM project back on 1990's "Skeleton at the Feast." This album is also a feast: a collection of themes and incidental music from a wide range of films, from the SOUTH PACIFIC of "Bali Ha'i" to the South America of AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD. There is also original work, set to accompany Abel Gance's 1919 anti-war indictment J'ACCUSE and Rene Clair's 1924 surrealist masterpiece ENTR'ACTE (both originally silent)to the SPANISH DRACULA soundtrack for which Gary is already -- and rightfully -- celebrated. For those of us who know Gary primarily as an afficionado of the cinema of terror there are some hard-core electrified chills (VERTIGO, PSYCHO, ROSEMARY'S BABY) but are also plenty of nods to just plain great movie music: MONSIEUR HULOT'S HOLIDAY, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE, SEX AND LUCIA, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. But whatever the film, the music is delivered with consummate skill, a real verve, and a palpable love both of film as film and for film as a platform for the making of music that enchants, transports, terrifies, and delights. Here is music for fighting, for loving, for dying, music that plumbs our innermost fears and lifts us high above the landscape where we can float free. If you are a fan of Gary Lucas, a fan of movie music, or just someone who loves a guitar that sings and weeps and cries out and hymns one to sleep, you must buy this album. 100% A KEEPER!!
