Product Description

Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus) – Amazon.com Exclusive

1942 in the middle of Northeastern Brazil, two very different men meet along the road: Johan, an aspirin salesman avoiding the German draft, and Ranulpho, a rural Brazilian seeking escape from the drought. Although their personalities and lives are worlds apart, the two men develop a deep friendship, as Johan, in an effort to provide Ranulpho with job skills, teaches Ranulpho to run the film projector, and drive a truck.

In this deliberately-paced road film, Marcelo Gomes reminds us that war is as close as Johan's radio, broadcasting its relentless warnings that all lives are changed when the world is in conflict.

"A modest but lovely road movie! Especially captivating."
-Time out London

"Thoughtful...Every quotidian moment seems to tremble with mystery and possibility." -New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars An Understated Gem About Choosing Your Own Future August 17, 2011
Format:DVD
2005's "Cinema, Aspirins, and Vultures" is a surprisingly straightforward, simple and understated story. Its power derives from the fact that it is underplayed to perfection. Set in 1942, the tale introduces a German traveling salesman who befriends a local on the road. The two form a tentative bond as they traverse the country from small town to small town. As world news starts to invade their idyllic lifestyle, the salesman and his new companion must make some important decisions about what the future holds for them both. Both actors are terrific in subtle performances--and the underlying sadness that interrupts their journey is so strong because it is largely left under the surface and not dealt with in a melodramatic fashion. KGHarris, 8/11.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Movie with Heart October 27, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Glad I bought this DVD. It reveals a slice of rural Brazil during WWII from the prospective of two unlikely friends. As with Central Station, you evolve to like and care about the central characters.

I was totally charmed by this Brazilian movie at the Palm Springs Film Festival. Just get it, and you will see. If you liked "Central Station," you will love this movie.
