5.0 out of 5 stars Experimental filmmaking from a Brazilian pop legend, September 9, 2009
This review is from: Cinema Falado (DVD)
"Cinema Falado"
Directed by Caetano Veloso
(1986)
------------------------------------------
In addition to being one of modern Brazil's greatest popular composers and musical performers, MPB legend Caetano Veloso is also a student of experimental film, and here he puts his interest in cinema theory into practice, directing a non-music movie that is as difficult as it is beguiling. There are glimpses into Veloso's social scene, with folks just hanging out chatting in unidentified apartments, and -- unless I'm mistaken -- even some footage of his son, Moreno Veloso, a decade or so before he became a pop star himself. This is purposefully challenging (if not completely inaccessible) filmmaking, but for diehard Veloso fans, probably a must-see, just to get a full sense of his cultural interests and artistic range.
