Book Description

December 1, 2004
Get ready for some of the best movie medicine ever made.
The smash hit women's film guide Cinematherapy taught women that comfort, self-acceptance, inspiration, and humor were no farther away than the video store - and inspired the daily primetime show on the WE Network (Women's Entertainment). Now the authors are back with a Cinematherapy take on the Oscar canon and how these award-winning films serve not only as a celluloid pharmacy but also as a window into ourselves, our relationships, and our times.
Starting with the present and working backward by decade, Cinematherapy Goes to the Oscars uncovers the grand themes of each decade's award-winning films, from the Father Issue films of the seventies, with their ambiguous father figures (Patton, Kramer vs. Kramer) to bad girls acting out for disapproving fathers' love (Klute, Cabaret), to the Unsung Hero films of the fifties (On the Waterfront, The African Queen). Along the way there is great dish on who wore what on the Red Carpet, who said what in their acceptance speeches, and party tips for throwing a four-star Oscar bash, as well as returning popular sidebars like the Handy Hunk Chart.
As the first female take on these sacred cows of the Silver Screen, focusing on the moments, messages, leading ladies, and supporting men that matter to us most, Cinematherapy Goes to the Oscars is the ultimate indulgence for every woman ready to curl up and take charge of her own remote control.

More About the Author

I am a freelance writer, editor, mother of a child who was diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction (now more commonly called sensory processing disorder) and developmental delays, a rock and roll guitarist and bassist, a collector of vintage Barbies, and a passionate believer in the power of broadening one's perspective.

My first book was written when I was a full-time acquisitions editor at HarperCollins. My cousin, Beverly West, and I had been toying with the idea of collaborating on a humor book when the perfect title suddenly struck: Meditations for Men Who Do Next to Nothing (and Would Like to Do Even Less). After 9 publishers turned down our proposal, we had an auction, sold the book to Warner, and ended up selling 60,000 in 4 printings (and sold Italian translation rights, too). I was hooked on being an author!

Over the years, I've cowritten several books and ghostwritten just as many, but honestly, I love working on quality books so much that I have had fun just proofreading or copyediting them back in the day when I was making extra money as a junior editor. I've had the great fortune to be able to assist such notables as Marianne Williamson, Dr. Dean Ornish, and John Gray among others, and absolutely love what I do. I'm a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, an extremely helpful organization for any author looking for information, advice, support, and networking.

Most of the books I work on can be found in Amazon's Mind/Body/Spirit category, which holistically encompasses many different aspects of fostering well-being. I also work on books in the areas of psychology, special needs parenting (check out the award-winning and recently rereleased Raising a Sensory Smart Child), and even film (I coauthored the bestselling Cinematherapy series).

I live in Wisconsin with my amazing husband and fabulous son.

This review is from: Cinematherapy Goes To The Oscars: The Girls Guide to the Best Movie Medicine Ever Made (Paperback)
If you like the other Cinematherapy books, you'll love this one.

While I don't completely agree with the way the movies are divided into chapters, this is a funny book that suggests that watching different classic movies "will cure what ails ya". Laugh-out-loud funny.

I just wish that they would use some other films, other than ones already mentioned in previous books.
