Editorial Reviews

Washington, DC-based trio, Thunderball, are globally renowned purveyors of sophisticated, stereophonic-thrillers, and cinematic dub. Since 1997 their productions have shifted effortlessly between the genres of drum & bass, breakbeat and downtempo, building a strong following for their signature sound. As one of the first artists signed to ESL Music, Thunderball released their first album, Ambassadors of Style, (1999) to critical acclaim. Rolling Stone lauded the album with 3 1/2 stars for its smooth, cosmopolitan drum and bass." Thunderball's seminal second recording, Scorpio Rising, (2001) was a downtempo classic, hailed by All Music Guide as "blaxploitation funk, cinematic soul, bossa nova lounge, downtempo dub, and downtown drum'n'bass all come together to create a hipster vibe few other groups could even aspire to, let alone create."

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty different from their previous stuff..., January 13, 2007

This review is from: Cinescope (Audio CD)
i am a huge fan of thievery corporation and esl in general, and i thought scorpio rising was one of the best new soul or electro-soul albums ever. be forewarned this album is pretty divergent from both scorpio rising and ambassadors of style, which was more drum and bass. this album actually sounds much more like thievery, with some sitar and all, only not as solid. i was kind of disappointed:(

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you Kidding me?, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Cinescope (Audio CD)
I have probably purchased upwards of 100 albums on Amazon over the years. I have never left a review. I am leaving this review because the prior reviews are so wrong on this album.
And I am a fan of justice.
If you like CDs that combine jazz, blues, world beat, sitar, and funk it up, then just buy this CD. If you like anything from ESL, Thievery Corp, Tosca, K & D, etc, this album is fantastic. Just listen to the tracks, they speak for themselves. Do it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Different sort of album, different sort of response, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Cinescope (Audio CD)
I was very excited for this album as "Scorpio Rising" and "Ambassadors of Style" are two exceptional works. Hearing "Road To Benares" off of Thievery's AOL Music DJ Sessions got me even more excited. But, when it actually arrived I was quite disappointed. It is very much a departure from their usual style. It still has a very 70's movie feel but almost every track has vocals. I found most tracks uninspired, or at least not what you'd come to expect. The two exceptions are "Road To Benares" and "Lost Vagueness" which are both excellent songs. So for right now I'll hold on dearly to their first two albums and hope for another strong effort next time.
