"A unique approach to magic along with memorable characters makes this series opener a good choice for most fantasy collections." - Library Journal
"...an extraordinary tale of sorcery and power, terrible prejudice, war and loss, set in a world apart from yet not so very different from our own. Cullum takes a hard look at the results and the high price of ignorance, bigotry, and ethnocentrism in a thoughtful novel with an unusual piece of magic at the center of its story....Great fantasy with a conscience." Paula Luedtke - Booklist
"I have long hoped for the sequel to continue the story of Jerevan, in particular: the whale-sized wizard who must master magic to overcome a curse of gluttony."
- Lynda Williams, author Okal Rel Universe Saga
