Flowers offers an excellent explanation of Aztec beliefs and society and why it was rather effortless for a Spaniard to conquer and manipulate this civilization. The interactions between Cort?s and Montezuma and the role of Marina, Cort?s's treacherous Mayan translator, are explained in a manner that makes this period fascinating. Cinqu? presents a brief history of slave trade from Roman times through the U.S. court decisions regarding the Amistad, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil War. The convoluted journey of Joseph Cinqu? is chronicled along with significant developments in the slave trade. This volume would serve as an excellent companion to Walter Dean Myers's Amistad (Dutton, 1998). Black-and-white photographs and reproductions effectively supplement the texts. Boxed excerpts from source documents are included. Accessible volumes that will be invaluable to report writers.
