Quirky Flights of Musical Fancy,
By
This review is from: Circa (Audio CD)
This CD documents an unusual combination of instruments: piano (Cain), trumpet (Alessi), and saxophone (Epstein). Not only is the sonority of this combination unusual, but so are the compositions themselves, which sound sometimes improvised, but which must have been quite carefully composed. I have never heard music quite like this, and I must admit that the first few times I listened to Circa, I did not really warm to it; however, something kept drawing me back to play it again, and eventually these quirky flights of musical fancy won me over. This is probing music, carefully crafted, very delicate, yet assertive in its own subtle way. I'd like to think that my contradictory-sounding description reflects the contradictory moods of the music, not just my own mental confusion--listen to Circa and decide for yourself. Viva Las Vegas!
