Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Each of us has a circadian rhythm--daily cyclical changes in chemistry and behavior--that are measured by shifts in body temperature, blood pressure, heartbeat, breathing, and body chemistries. When our circadian rhythms are disrupted by poor lifestyle choices, optimum health is sacrificed. The Circadian Prescription: Get in Step with Your Body's Natural Rhythms to Maximize Energy, Vitality, and Longevity by alternative health expert Sidney Baker, M.D., with Karen Baar, M.P.H., provides a simple 10-step plan to right your rhythms.

This thought-provoking, clearly written book based on experimental science and the experiences of Dr. Baker's patients will challenge many commonly held nutritional beliefs. At the center of the prescription is the Circadian Diet, a flexible eating plan designed to give the body the fuel it needs when it needs it (according to Baker, that means protein during the day and carbohydrates at night). The plan also includes breathing and meditation techniques, rhythmic exercise, and tips to improve sleep habits, beat jet lag, and overcome odd work shifts. Separate chapters are also devoted to weight loss, the role of intestinal flora and phytonutrients, and the specific needs of women, men, and children. --Ellen Albertston --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Energy Galore!, August 28, 2000
By
Lisa (Milford, CT) - See all my reviews
I am a mother of two young children and excited to say that after reading Dr. Baker's book and following his circadian prescription I have more energy then I have had in years. Just after one week I noticed dramatic changes. I am no longer tired all day, my mood in general has improved immensely and I lost weight without even trying. Cheers to Dr. Baker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a diet that you can enjoy!, June 20, 2000
Karen Baar and Sidney MacDonald Baker have done it! They have created a diet that will not make you miserable. No more cravings or whining about lack of pasta or steak. Forget all the no carbs and low fat diets. This one really works, and it helps to make you feel your best as well. Rather than cutting out certain foods, the Circadian diet gives a schedule that guides you on what times to eat what foods. The book is insighful with much useful information. Give it a try...it can't hurt and most likely, you will be quite glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars $1.00 used - Buy Book !, May 7, 2000
By A Customer
What really sold me on this book was that honestly I had dimly begun to suspect the reasoning myself - advertising bombards us with "Carbohydrates Are For Energy", but they always seem to put me to sleep during the day when I need to think clearly. So when Dr. Baker says effectively 'duh you idiot that's right save the carbos for dinner', reinforcing my personal intuition, I immediately bought the book !

"Protein-in-day, carbs-at-night" is of course not patentable, but it seems to work, and the details are worth $1.00, plus which it is fairly information-dense, not one of those padded tomes.
