Ordinary women struggle valiently for long-deferred justice.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
Circle of Love Over Death paints a realistic, and inspiring, picture of how "ordinary" women faced with terrible loss(es)-- the loss of their children -- are fighting for justice. There is background text for each chapter, followed by testimonies of mothers whose sons and daughters "disappeared." The "children" (most of whom were in their late teens to mid-twenties) were from varied backgrounds and ethnic groups, but they shared a deep desire to better the lives of the poor, and acted upon that desire. This was their crime. The mothers' testimonies often relate gruesome, shocking details. Their stories are filled with not only indescribable pain and loss, but with the adamant refusal to be a victim. After more than twenty years, and at risk of personal safety, these courageous women continue their struggle. Their goal is twofold: for justice for the disappeared, and to call the world's attention to this flagrant violation of human rights. Their Thursday afternoon marches around the Plaza de Mayo have attracted worldwide attention and support. Warning: This book may inspire you to become more involved with social justice and global concern for humanity.

Testimonies of Love,
By Kendra Tidwell (Normal, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
"They took the best of a generation...They didn't even let us know why they took them away either." This is just one example of the testimonies of the mothers who children "disappeared" In a time of dictatorship, children were disappearing left and right with no explanation. All of the mothers banned together and marched in a circle on Thursdays in the Plaza, hence the name Cirlce of Love. The main focus of the mothers was trying to get information. Any information at all would be taken with great depth and give them hope to carry on. This book really speaks about the love that these women had for their children and the love they still carry on. Even when they only got silence when questioning authorities they still marched on. They even marched on after they knew that all the disappeared were dead. These women and mothers not only had to struggle dealing with their childen's disappearance, but they were also forced to live in fear. Parent's had to fear their children's activities, whether they be students going to a school meetings, teachers, or working towards a career, everything was a motive for repression. Because of the disappearances so many loved ones were forced to change their way of life. They changed their habits and social and family customs. Everyone was forced into live in fear. This is a very emotional book. But I think that it is something that everyone should read and be aware of. The testimonies of these women are the truth, and there is no hiding the truth.

By Abby (Normal, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
Circle of Love over Death, written by Matilde Mellibovsky, gives true testimonies from mothers from Argentina who had lost their children. These testimonies are true stories from women who's children have disappeared during the Argentinian "dirty war." The Mothers, in order to get some justice, appear at the Plaza de Mayo every Thursday afternoon demanding for answers about the disappearnce of their children. This book portrays the love that these women had for their children. These women not only are not only fighting for human's rights, but as for rights as a mother. Even when they received no answers when questioning authorities they still kept marching.

Circle of Love Over Death is an outstanding book written by Matilde Mellibovsky. It gives true testimonies given by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo. Before reading this book I knew nothing about the Argentinian war. This book opened my eyes and made me realize the tragedy that was occuring there. It also showed how the Mothers and Grandmothers never stopped fighting for answers and justice. I would definatly recommend this book.

A Tragic Story,
By Becky Gates (Normal, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
Circle of Love Over Death really opened my eyes to what was happening to the people in Argentina. It was shocking to read the stories of what happened to these people. I cannot even begin to imagine the kind of pain the mothers went through when their children disappeared and there was absolutely nothing they could do. Matilde Mellibovsky did a wonderful job of portraying the hurt, despair, and helplessness of the mothers as they did everything they could think of to find their disappeared children. I think this a great book that really touched me. However, some of the stories did seem a little repetitive.

Circle of Love Over Death,

This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
"Our children were not taken as prisoners from a battlefield; totally defenseless, they were abducted from their homes, from the street, from their places of study and work. Our struggle has taken years of ceaseless searching and every other possible method, but it has been carried out by legal, constitutional, non-violent methods-with a clean face."Circle of Love Over Death gives you a first hand testimony into the horrors and ugliness that Argentina battled through for many years. Through the eyes of each of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, you find an emotional and physical struggle to find the answers that they were never given, where their children are. This book touches on every human emotion possible and really gives you a true understanding of how one political force can take out an entire country.

Haunting Images from the eyes of a mother,
By Lori Spoula (Normal, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
In Circle of love over death, mothers whos children were taken away during the turbulent 70s in Argentina, gave their testomonies of the abduction and what came after. Before I read this book I had no knowledge of this sort of thing ever happening in Argentina. The haunting tales of the mothers showed the pain of losing a child, or children for as little reason as they were helping the poor. This book also showed how these women were able to bond together after the loss of their children to fight for the knowledge of what happened to the children. This book covers the events in Argentina since the 1970s, and describes the pain and horror of the mothers as the search for information about the whereabouts of their children, even twenty years after their abduction. I think this book was very informative and made us aware of situation that was not well publicized in the united states at all.

Circle of Love,

This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
This book really made me realize what happened in Argentina. I could hardly believe what happened to these people. The pain not just the mothers had to go through but the entire country was bad. The title of this book fit the book very well. This circle of love was the only thing that the mothers had to keep themselves together in these hard times. The stories were some what repetative in the book obut they really make the reader aware of the problem in Argentina and what the mothers had to go through. The mothers tried everything to find their chidlren, like most mothers would do for their children.

This review is from: Circle of Love Over Death: The Story of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Paperback)
Circle of Love Over Death is an outstanding and emotional book. It engulfs the reader through the real-life stories of the Mother's of Plaza de Mayo. Matilde Mellibovsky's choice to structure this book as a testimonial, allowed the readers to feel the pain of the mothers of the "disappeared." Circle of Love Over Death explained the process of the disappearances and the pain of not knowing whether their realtives were alive or dead. It explained the formation of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, the obstacles they had to face, and the political advances that came from the group's activities. This is an excellent book that explains a tragedy in history through personal experiences.
