An International Love Story, June 22, 2005
This review is from: Circle of Love (Paperback)
Lucia Jordan is only seventeen and a freshman in college when she meets the Jason Kyle. He's twenty-six and interning at a nearby hospital. He thinks she's much too young for him, but falls hard for her, in spite of the age difference. Lucia has emigrated with her parents from Nicaragua. Her family is devout Catholic and bound by the traditions of that country. Just before her eighteenth birthday, her world caves in. Her father tells her their old family friend has died. She must return to Nicaragua to marry his son, Raoul, to fulfill a promise her father made to his friend. Lucia has been friends with Raoul since childhood, but she loves Jason. Still she is bound by her tradition. She arranges a tryst with Jason, feeling they deserve at least one weekend together before she has to leave. She goes without telling him she's going or why she must leave. She marries Raoul, a good man who loves her so deeply he even raises her son, Jordan, as his own, though he knows he isn't. Lucia decides to make the best of things and comes to genuinely love Raoul. She gives birth to a daughter, Gina Suzanne.
Revolution is sweeping the country and Lucia wants to return to America to protect the children, but Raoul refuses. After he dies saving Jordan, Lucia returns to her parents with her children and enters nursing school. After graduating, she accepts a position at a medical practice in Texas, run by kindly Doctor Trenton who is retiring, leaving his son to run the practice. Will Lucia ever see Jason again? Or will she start anew and find another love?
Circle of Love is a gentle romance set against a backdrop of very different cultures. Ms. Gummels has done a terrific job of making her characters and their motives come alive. She also treats the reader to some of her lovely poetry. Romance lovers are sure to love this one.
