5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, you haven't read this book?
I hope you're just dipping into this out of idle curiosity- want to see what others think of this superb book. But maybe you're reading all these reviews because you haven't read Sandry' Book. Sure, it was cliche, but it was still a very good read. Things can be cliche and still end up being nice and charming. I loved those books. 5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, you haven't read this book?, January 15, 2000
This review is from: Circle Of Magic #01: Sandry's Book (Paperback)
I hope you're just dipping into this out of idle curiosity- want to see what others think of this superb book. But maybe you're reading all these reviews because you haven't read Sandry' Book. Well, in the words of Bob Crachit, "A triumph . . . another triumph!" Sandry's Book is an enthralling story of four children that are as different as can be. Their talents are identified, and they are brought to Winding Circle Temple, where one would just expect them to learn and head out. But these are no ordinary gifts. Against all odds, Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar must overcome the evil that has entered the temple life. This tale is cleverly planned, beautifully written, and, in my opinion, a fresh classic by Tamora Pierce that will be enjoyed for generations to come. You don't have to look very far to find someone who had read and loved Sandry's Book. In fact, I'd venture to say that 99% of everyone that has read this has become hooked on Tamora Pierce's books. Honestly, you're missing out- get Sandry's Book soon, and you'll be opening a window into the world of fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandry's Book Great!, March 5, 2000

Sandry's Book, the first in Tamora Pierce's new series Circle of Magic, is definitely a new winner. This book really shows that even though people can be extremly different it does not mean that they can not get along. The book takes place on a world were magic is common, but only certain kinds. It is the story of four young people and their struggle with both friendship and magic. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good fantasy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandry's Book, December 28, 1999

This review is from: Circle Of Magic #01: Sandry's Book (Paperback)
Sandry's Book was what started me into the Circle of Magic series. How could you not like it? It seems that when Tris won't tell of her backround and what happened before she ended up at Winding Circle, you are the only person to know of what she went through. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves Tamora Pierce, no matter the age. This book introduced me into all of Pierce's wonderful books. I haven't stopped reading her books and I can't wait for her to write more. The way she wrote this book to include all of Discipine's inhabitants is wonderful. You don't only get to read about Sandry but her many friends as well. You not only learn about Sandry but also Tris, Daja, and Briar. This book is a great way to start off your own Tamora Pierce collection!

...for putting out this type of work. I remember getting this book because I've enjoyed this author's work in the past. The Quartet was wonderful. Sure, it was cliche, but it was still a very good read. Things can be cliche and still end up being nice and charming. I loved those books. When Immortals came out, I ate it up, but it left a sour taste in my mouth towards the end. In the beginning it was wonderful, but somewhere durring the third book it began to drop off. And, by the Goddess, it didn't stop dropping off at this book. It kept going. Sure, there's plenty worse out there, but when a good author begins to drop off, it tends to tick me off. This is similar to the waterfall that Redwall fell down when Outcast of Redwall was written, only not as severe. The new characters were ok, but nothing too great or lovable. If you don't put out excellent characters, the story won't flow as well, because people don't want the good guys to win because they're cardboard cutouts, they want them to win because they're interesting and lovable and amusing! That's my first gripe: that the leads are really cutouts of other characters, it was hard for me to want them to survive because they were the good guys. Second, the new world that they're in... it did not seem very real to me, sort of like it was thrown together at the last minute by the Gods. Tortall is a much better world, simply because it's been fleshed out through the past books, so it does not have the feel of a map hastily drawn out with names stuck on like Pierce was playing pin the tail on the donkey. The story itself was dull as well, for the most part. However, the introduction of crafts magic was interesting.

Basically, this series is ok if you're already a fan of fantasy, though do not start on it if you are just getting into the genre - it is not a wonderful example of the work this genre can produce. Take my advice and look at Piece's older books first, so that you won't be frightened away from them upon reading this one first. This book is not horrible, but it's not wonderful either. So, its score is right between the two extremes: three.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A FABULOUS BOOK, I LOVED IT!!!!!, August 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Circle Of Magic #01: Sandry's Book (Paperback)
I had read Pierces other two series, and kept thinking, when is she going to write another!!!??? Then one day I was at the library, and was looking up Tamora Pierce, and saw she had written two more books!!!! I immeadiately went to amazon and ordered Sandry's Book, and Tris's book. I love them both, and love all the charecters in them!!! I love the ending (which I'm not going to say what happens, just incase the readers havn't read it yet) Because you feel like you are really trapped in that cave. I love how it explaines how each charecter gets to Winding Circle. And The choice of Charecters!!! Tris, the Merchant, Sandry, the Noble, Daja, the Trader, and Briar, the Thief!! How they all come together, and become Friends!! I loved this book, and I would reccomend it to anyone!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars For any magic lover!!!, June 28, 2001

i got this book through a friend. At first it didn't really click but after some time and the first few pages, i was hooked! Tamora Pierce gives descriptions which don't bore you to death like most people. Set in a completely fictional and definitely more exciting than the real world type of place, Sandry's Book is a captivating read. The characters are easy to relate to. Sandry feels that what people think she's supposed to be is the opposite of who she is, Daja feels restrained, not being able to do what she wants due to tradition, briar feels like an outcast ready to rebel and Tris feels like everything is against her most of the time and her anger is easy to understand. Over all, it's a must read book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandry+Briar? (I hope so), April 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Circle Of Magic #01: Sandry's Book (Paperback)
Ok, this was a totally awesome book. I have not read any of her other books so I don't know how it is compared to them. I didn't think it was as good as the other books in the quartet because it didn't have enough romance between Sandry and Briar (I can make romance out of the simplest phrase). I have to say that Sandry and Briar are my 2 favorite characters. then Daja. I don't like Tris because, in this book, Briar seems to like her and that just makes me mad. Oh, well, though. The cover is kind of misleading for all you Sandry+Briar fans. I didn't like the beginning very much but the end rocked. Oh, and one thing I DIDN'T like about this book was that you didn't get to know Rosethorn very well and you thought she was totally mean (at least, you might have. But the other books suggest otherwise. Being the total idiot I am, I read the Circle Opens 1st, thinking IT was the 1st book in the series and I was totally confused so I read this one LAST. OH well, though. It was GREAT! (Go Sandry and Briar! )

The first book in the Circle of Magic, the Magic in the Weaving, was a really good book. This book was quite humorous at different points. Every reader who enjoys fantasy books would really enjoy this, I mean, would I lie? This books, as well as all books by Tamora Pierce, deserves a 5 star.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!!!!!, September 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Circle Of Magic #01: Sandry's Book (Paperback)
I absolutely LOVED this book! It's really good, and when I spotted it at the library (I'm a Tamora Pierce fan) I just had to get it! I have to admit one thing though, I was confused at the beginning with all the jumping around stuff. But once they were all together, I thought it was awsome! And about missing Tortall, I don't really care. I mean, not everything happens in one country! Think about it! Although I would like to hear about what happens to Daine, Alanna, and all the other people, I think Sandry, Briar, Daja, and last and LEAST Tris (I hate her!) are really cool too. So, if you haven't already, READ THIS BOOK!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get off Tortall!!!!!, August 21, 1998

I must say most of you lot are a bunch of wet puppies. Look at Anne McCaffrey, what, about 10 worlds? And here you are, griping about Tamora Pierce because she wanted to create another world! Do you expect her to stick to Tortall for the rest of her life? If i was her I'd give you all a punch in the nose! And what do you mean, Sandry, *only* ties them all together? ONLY!!! Get off the grass you lot and enjoy the new series for what it is!!

Anyway a great book.
