5.0 out of 5 stars rawkin... just let yourself go... metal stuff March 22, 2007
By Pj
Format:Audio CD
I just got this yesterday and it totally rocks!! I am playing the crap out of it and I am very very sure it will be played quite often!! I may need to buy another Circle Of Power CD so I have one for the house and one to play in the car & cranked way up... till the mirrors vibrate!!! ; ) It's got heavy guitar and the vocals are awesome, Love the ozzy type laugh in Monster. It just has all the great rawkin... just let yourself go... metal stuff within the whole CD!! I loved Blind and Monster right off the bat with the heavy guitar and found myself getting totally into it!! Just get it... You Will Not be disappointed at all!!!!

I'll admit it: Pownd's Circle of Power album didn't click with me the first few times I listened to it. The style of music isn't what I usually listen to (I'm more of a progressive metal kind of guy). But anything released by Nightmare Records is worth a listen. Nightmare is one of the best American labels going, with a sky-high standard of quality. So I trust them.

In this case, that trust paid off. Pownd is a straight-forward metal band that I probably wouldn't have paid attention to (or even discovered) had I not known about Nightmare Records.

So I gave Pownd a try.

And I'm glad I did.

The first song ("Still Bleed") was a bit derivative -- it sounded like something I'd heard before...many times -- but after that, the album hooked me. By the third track ("Monster," which has an '80s metal party band vibe to it) I was totally into it.

What I like about Pownd is their big, fat riffs -- slabs of metal that have air guitar written all over them. In other words, Pownd is probably one heck of a fun band to see in concert. On album, they sound like they're having fun. Live, I'm sure they'd tear the roof off. I've love to see these guys in concert.

One of my favorite songs off Pownd's debut is the power ballad "Never Means Forever," which is a song with a delicate intro that gives way to crunchy chords and an infectious chorus with layered background vocals that I really enjoy. Nice lead guitar solo, too. Short, sweet, and offering up a cool tone that offset the other guitar sounds nicely.

Vocally, Pownd has the goods. Lead singer Michael Duncan has some pipes that are showcased nicely on "Never Means Forever."

"Divided," the fifth track, brings back the in-your-face guitar riffs that Pownd do so well.

Great guitar riffs, great vocals....well worth checking out! It's hard to pick favorites, but some outstanding tracks are "Blind," "Monster," "The Stand," and "Changes."

4.0 out of 5 stars Power is accurate! December 17, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I've been spinning Pownd's debut, Circle of Power, for a couple of weeks now. It's been very difficult for me to pin point a sub-genre of metal that I can neatly put this band into. At times Pownd can remind me of the modern metal bands such as, Down or Disturbed. With that said, at times they harken back to a melodic sound from bands such as, Iron Maiden or Fates Warning. For this reason, Circle of Power, offers up a fresh outlook on a genre of metal that can at times, become stale. Upon hearing Pownd's debut you'll hear heavy, chugging riffs, melodic leads, and a lead vocalist that has a voice ranging from Ray Alder's smooth tone to Rob Halford's ball squeezing shrills! Make no mistake, I thoroughly believe this disc can offer most metal fans something to grab ahold of. Check out Pownd's MySpace page at In addition, the band's website is [...]

Cool, I just discovered them last summer, a friend of the band let me listen to a demo, and it stayed in my cd player for a month! This is absolutely the best CD in many, many years! You know that I must think so to start the first post, eh?
