getting better and better,

This review is from: Circle of Seven (Paperback)
Having read The Lasko Interview (Mr. Jacobsen's previous novel) I was anxious to read this one as well. I reviewed this novel for Broadman & Holman Publishers because I am a buyer for a bookstore. Jacobsen does characterization and plot very well and I was pleased to discover that he did an even better job with this novel. He weaves a Christian theme into his books without making it too obvious, which is a talent not possessed by all Christian authors. The area of polls and questionnaires is one I have long been suspicious of, because they are so easily manipulated. Jacobsen does an excellent job of giving a fictional account of just how easily this can be done and at the same time giving an enjoyably exciting story behind it. He's just released his new novel (Interview with the Devil). Can't wait to read it, too!

A MUST READ for the 2000 Presidential Campaign,
By Shelby Watson (Wilmington, DE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Circle of Seven (Paperback)
An INCREDIBLE book! There are so many surprises in the plot of the stories - A VERY timely book, considering that we are in the midst of the Presidential Campaign. Have you ever wondered about the "opinion polls" that you see so often on television and in newspapers? How the opinions of a few are promoted as the opinion of the nation at large? This book, superbly written, answers those questions. The book starts out with a bang and will have you holding your breath until the last page! I recommend this book highly and applaud Mr. Jacobsen for an entertaining but hard-hitting book.

Jacobsen writes with a light, airy style. The scenes are short, the pace is fast, and the characters breathe just enough life into the story for you to care. I didn't care deeply about the personal aspects of the story--they, too, were somewhat fast and airy--but the theme is ably handled and vitally important. Jacobsen poses heavy questions: Can the media be trusted? Can the media be manipulated? Can a Christian or moral person have an influence working for the media? The answers are found, or at least explored, within this provocative novel. With just enough facts and figures to back his premise, Clay Jacobsen uses his years of experience in the media to hammer home a strong lesson about looking through the lies. His characters--never dumbed-down, but at times cliched--also find truth in relationships with Jesus Christ. The author avoids religious overtones and pulpit-pounding, while still making his point clear. I also appreciated that his villian was three-dimensional, that he was wicked without being predictable, he was delusional without having to rub his hands together and chuckle evilly. For a fast-paced read that drives home some deeper points, this book is well worth it.

This is a fast paced story with lots of action.
Mark Taylor is an investigative reporter who is looking for a big story for the television 'sweeps' period. He begins looking into the opinion polling industry and encounters incredible corruption in the way that results are skewed to manipulate particular outcomes of events. During the course of his investigation, Taylor uncovers murder, kidnapping, and collusion on a grand scale. The plot explores the effects of the polling industry on the outcome of elections, issues, etc. Christian characters and ideas are interwoven into the story during the course of everyday life. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys a page turner that is difficult to put down. It is also thought provoking for anyone who has ever had concerns about the rampant use of polling in today's political climate. Jacobsen does an excellent job of theorizing how manipulations could occur.

Clay Jacobsen spins a tail of intrigue and mystery as he introduces Mark Taylor a investigative television reporter who uncovers a dangerous secret during an investigative reporting assignment. The secret he uncovers threatens not only his career but his very life as he attempts to divulge this deadly secret before he is forever silenced. The plot thickens as romance blooms between Mark and Tracy, the grandaughter of the mysterious Circle of Seven leader. The Circle of Seven will stop at nothing to keep their identity and their secrets forever concealed. No one is safe. The characters are well developed and the plot fast paced and exciting. Once you pick up this book block out time to read in its entirety because you won't be able to put it down.

After reading The Lasko Interview by Clay Jacobsen, it was a very long wait for Circle of Seven to be released, but it was well worth it. Clay did not disappoint his readers! Circle of Seven is definitely a page-turner. As the suspense built, I could not put the book down. Not only is there powerful suspense, there is also a great deal of Biblical teaching woven throughout the book. If you are looking for an intense suspense novel that will encourage you in your walk with Christ, Circle of Seven is for you.

WONDERFULLY FRIGHTENING,
This review is from: Circle of Seven (Paperback)
As I read this book, I paid closer attention to how the media gave us the news. Mr. Jacobsen has done a tremendous job of realistically portraying what can potentially happen if the wrong people are in power. And who really has all the power? I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of what was written here is true. That's pretty scary....

Clay Jacobson's Circle of Seven is Compelling,
By
This review is from: Circle of Seven (Paperback)
Author Clay Jacobson continues to satisfy. In Circle of Seven, Jacobson introduced us to Mark Taylor, former Marine turned television reporter who struggles with how his faith in God fits into his career as a member of a very liberal profession -- the media.
In Circle, Taylor investigates something that could come from the newspaper headlines any day -- the impact that opinion polls can have on determining the direction of our country (and the world), and how that impact can be effected by manipulating those toward a certain outcome. Jacobson's treatment of this topic is so convincing, so very possibly real, that you won't be able to read through this book without giving some very serious thought to the validity of the latest CNN/Gallup polls. As Taylor discovers that the very head of his network owns or controls the majority of the polling companies in the country, he discovers just how a marriage between pollers and the media can steer public opinion on a pre-determined course. When further investigation reveals that this same network executive heads a very powerful, very secret organization with its finger on the pulse of the nation, Taylor finds his very way of life threatened. Clay Jacobson delivers a very entertaining story, just as he did in Interview With The Devil. A media expert himself, Jacobson knows the inner workings of the big networks and how the power they wield can influence the very policy of our nation. Circle of Seven is a very realistic portrayal of what might be. Jeff Cole is an author, blogger, and podcaster[...] |
