Editorial Reviews

2009 release. Consider Circle Snare a hard-wrought souvenir. Composed and realized in the midst of a comprehensive Scandinavian/European tour in 2008, John Wiese found himself tangled deep in dialogue with his instruments and ideas. Wiese increasingly scrutinized his native tongue and vocabulary, seeking new forms of grammar and cadence, as only extensive dives in unfamiliar waters can inspire. His given electronic anatomy of drum machine, microphones, tapes, and MSP folded out of their hard accustomed formations, breaking out into a more cogent and vital arsenal. Circle Snare is the cumulative result -- a finely detailed and dimensional evolution of an already unique voice.

I own a very nice Sissy Spacek cd called Gore Jet, A great Marhaug/Wiese cd called Country and Western and I've seen John Wiese play live in LA about 10 times (the man delivers the live goods, I especially have fond memories of a few shows he did where he brought 8 speakers and placed them around the audience, it was like stereo x 4). I decided it was time to get one of his solo cds. This cd is harsh and loud, but not the whole time, but even the quiet parts are quite sick and "broken" sounding. I like it when an instrument is played and it sounds broken, but there's nothing here at all resembling a musical instrument. It's very chaotic but there is certainly a form, interesting ups and downs and enough different sounds and changes, that after a few listens I was still hearing things I had never noticed before. I am always thrilled when I get a cd that grows on you as you listen to it, like the first time I heard this, I wasn't sure if I liked it only a little or a lot, but it definitely left me with a strong craving to hear it again, and after a few times, I was loving it. Beautiful. Order from Misanthropic Agenda, check their website, or find the guy who runs it, Gerritt on Discogs, you'll get a much better deal.
