Book Description

May 1995
The Circle Of Stones takes you on an adventure of figuring out who built a mysterious 65 foot in diamter circle of stones in the Sierra Nevada mountains and what it was used for.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The circle was right on the California Emigrant Trail, so it was possible the emigrants or settlers built it, but for what purpose? A cattle coral? A camp? Or did the Native Americans build it? If so, was it a fort, a ceremonial circle, a house, a burial grounds or did it has some purpose in hunting?

Each chapter of the book explores one these possibilities. If you have an interest in California history in the Sierras, this book is fascinating reading. It's a nonfiction archeological mystery unraveled.

About the Author

Richard Schwartz loves to be outside. After graduating temple university, he joined the forest service to be out in the mountains and fight forest fires. It was there his path crossed the circle of stones. He was so taken by its mystery and beauty, he was compelled to take a year off and research the stone circle to understand it. He is currently a building contractor in Berkeley California and has just completed his second book, Berkeley 1900, which he hopes will be published later this year, 1999.

5.0 out of 5 stars a jewel of investigative research and history, January 17, 1999
This review is from: The Circle Of Stones, An Investigation of the Circle Of Stones (Mass Market Paperback)
Circle of Stones, An Investigation of the Circle of Stones by Richard A. Schwartz is one of those rare finds which leads you into the past with both intelligent thought and historical fact and imagination. This book takes you through many credible theories of how a mysterious circle of stones came to be.These theories are supported by interesting ethnographic facts and historical data. But the main attribute of Circle of Stones is that you can see that the author took the time to carefully and lovingly write this jewel as a tribute to those who have come before us,both Native American and American Pioneers.
