Book Description

April 18, 2003
New Tim Simpson art world mystery. What is the connection between abstract painter Ben Nicolson and an obscure piece of film?

To suggest that the Pimlico murder of a dubious lady calling herself Bassington has anything to do with Tim Simpson makes him extremely indignant. He is far too busy tracking down paintings by Sir William Nicholson and his abstract son Ben Nicholson for White's Art Fund, as well as looking into an investment in a film and photographic archive for his superiors at White's Bank.

But the murder victim was a film researcher and Tim's name is in her diary. And Tim's old rugby-playing friend Chief Inspector Nobby Roberts of Scotland Yard is irritatingly insistent. Past history makes Nobby suspicious. Even worse, the dynamic Anglo-French businessman soliciting the film archive investment appears to want to pre-guess Tim on the Bank's next art purchase.

It is not long before Tim, visiting a South African dealer friend in Hastings who owns fake Nicholsons, is involved in violence himself. The issue is even more complicated by the strange recurrence of references to the Finch-Hattons - relatives of the celebrated Denys of Out of Africa fame - and even Iris Barry, ex-mistress of Wyndham Lewis and film expert. It will take all of Tim's esoteric interest in art history and every ounce of his energy to bring the bewildering set of events to a dramatic conclusion.

Described by Library Journal as 'one of the finest series being written today', the Tim Simpson mysteries have an ardent and ever-growing following. An ideal introduction to this wonderful series, Circles and Squares is a clever and compelling novel that will delight art-lovers and crime fans alike.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Malcolm's fourteenth Tim Simpson adventure proves that this series ages as profitably as the works of art it features. Simpson, the series' dashing hero, spouts Wodehousian prose while scouring London and its environs for investments for the Art Fund of White's Bank. Currently, Simpson has his heart set on the paintings of two Nicholsons--father William and son Ben--whose styles could not be more different. When his Scotland Yard friend, Chief Inspector Nobby Roberts, confronts Simpson about his name appearing in the diary of the murdered Moira Bassington, neither can figure out an explanation. As Simpson tries to discover who Moira was and how he might know her, it soon becomes apparent that the dead woman is connected not only to him but also to artist Ben Nicholson. Further complicating matters are another murder and a vicious attack on Simpson's South African friend Dorkie Collins, who owns fake Nicholsons. En route to resolving this complex caper, Malcolm manipulates plot twists as deftly as a skilled artist wields a paintbrush. His graceful prose and obvious but unobtrusive knowledge of fine art add the finishing touches to an outstanding mystery. Jenny McLarin

5.0 out of 5 stars British Mystery combines Art with Murder, May 9, 2010

This review is from: Circles and Squares (Hardcover)
A delightful mystery series follows the adventures of an investor in art for sale as his quest leads him into murders galore. In this entry, the protagonist, Tim Simpson, finds himself involved in a murder case while seeking to hit a mother-lode in paintings by William and Ben Nicholson and archives of still and moving photographs of events historical. It all begins as his police inspector friend queries him as to why his name was found in the appointment diary of a murdered woman. From there, complications are compounded, idiosyncratic characters dealt with, and the art world explored. Writing is clear and witty, mystery complex but not overly confused, and settings well drawn and interesting. I can recommend the book to any reader, particularly, those with a curiosity about the art world. As an aside, for those who prefer the audio book format, it is available on CD's and by download via the Amazon-owned, [...]. The actor doing the reading is excellent, never allowing his English accent to blur the meaning for Americans, and capturing to the full the nuances and fun in story and characters.
