Book Description

Evolved Publishing brings you a rare glimpse into ancient Native American culture, in the award-winning historical novel, "Circles," by Ruby Standing Deer.
~~~~~~~~~~
With much of the world still undiscovered, a small band of people live a peaceful life, until the dream vision of a young boy, Feather Floating In Water, changes everything. Only nine winters old, Feather’s dreams turn his seemingly ordinary childhood into the journey of a lifetime. He must help his people face a terrifying destiny from which they cannot turn away. He must find a way to make his people listen.
Bright Sun Flower, the boy’s grandmother, guides his beginnings, teaching him about the Circle of Life, and how without it, no life can exist. But he needs a bigger push, and gets it from a grey wolf and a Great Elder. The boy’s journey leads him to discover that the Circle of Life involves all people, all living things, and not just the world he knows.
In the end, an ancient People guide the boy in his visions, toward an unexpected place hidden from outsiders.
This story is steeped in American Indian life, in their beliefs and humor, and in their love of family. It shows how we might benefit from the old ways today.
About the Author
Ruby Standing Deer has been a wanderer, and a journeyman newspaper pressman. She's spent years rescuing animals and learning from them. They've taught her that life does not have to be so hard, if you go with the flow and not against it. Her life revolves around writing and her family, which includes, of course, her animals. Two car accidents in the mid-nineties changed Ruby's life. She resented it at first, until understanding that she'd simply been put on another path. It was not an easy one, and continues to be a challenge, but she accepted it, and learns with each step she takes. Ruby writes because she's compelled to pass on knowledge. Her first book, "Circles," is more than just a story of family, or of the people who first settled in the Americas. It is a story of spirituality and the simple humor of everyday life, but also of the fear of the unknown. Life presents us a path; how we choose to navigate that "circle" is up to us. Watch for "Spirals," the sequel, Fall 2012. Find out more about Ruby at www.RubyStandinDeer.com.
5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story of what should have been. January 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Circles is the story of a young Indian boy who lives his life at the time of the first appearance of Europeans in North America. His tribe are known as the Fish People and live their lives peacefully in a canyon hunting, fishing and gathering without metals and where the horse is unknown.
The boy has been given the name 'Feather Floating on Water'. When we first meet him he is eight years old and lives with his grandparents, Hawk Soaring and Bright Sun Flower, and mother, Makes Baskets. They have a beautifully touching relationship and live in harmony with the world around them, giving as much as they take.
Feather is bothered by dreams however. His dreams warn of impending disaster as bearded men make their appearance in their world killing, enslaving and disturbing the harmony of the world as they go in search of gold. His grandmother, a wise woman of the tribe, helps him understand these dreams and guides him through his steps through childhood to an early manhood at age 14. The author takes pains to explain that not all of the bearded men are evil but most do not understand how to live in harmony.
Many in the tribe know Feather is a special boy and this belief is strengthened as Feather makes friends with a wild wolf and becomes a protégée of a holy woman fleeing with her group from the Europeans. Feather takes on a new name 'Shining Light' and leads his people, and other tribes, to a new land where they will be safe.
The story is strongly written and will appeal to those who believe that mankind should live in harmony with nature. If you expect savagery and blood - look elsewhere.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Journey March 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Gorgeous language, an inspiring story, and unforgettable characters--Circles has it all. I fell for this book in the very first chapter when we're introduced to Feather Floating, and I didn't fall out from under its spell even after I had read the final word. I found myself "thumbing" back through the pages to read particular passages just like I return to my favorite poems.
This book was written to be savored. I knew from the first page that this story would require a careful read by me because the story carries a depth that can only be reached by a deliberate read. You don't rush through a poem. Likewise, this book is not to be rushed. It unfolds gently and beautifully as you travel through the pages.
The sheer beauty of the language is as majestic as the images the author paints. Each stroke of her pen is tender and loving. A deep respect and a profound understanding of these characters and their journey is clearly evident from start to finish.
If you are looking for a book with exquisite writing and gentle, yet profound wisdom, then Circles will emanate with you. Read it, savor it, and pass it on to another reader. I passed it on to my 15 year old because it is the special type of book that speaks just as clearly to her youthful imagination as it does to my more weathered one.
More About the Author
Author of Circles and Courage Through Fear, a short story in a book called Evolution Book 1 Put out by my publishing Company, Evolved Publishing.
Life is a wondrous mystery that I still explore. I spent my youth "feeling" my way thought it. I traveled throughout the seventies, standing on one highway ramp or another, exploring the many corridors of our country, learning about life and what it had to offer.
In 1979, deep in winter, I settled down. I was lucky enough to become the first woman journeyman pressman of a major newspaper in Colorado. After ten years of working on printing presses, an injury forced me down another path.
I made and sold jewelry, cared (still do) for abandoned animals, volunteered for a horse rescue as well as a no kill shelter. I went to school for so many different careers that ended up combining my credits to get a degree in horticulture. Unfortunately, or so I thought back then, two car accidents during my last semester, my last class, prevented my pursuing it as a living.
I had no idea what my future held, but I was fortunate; my caring and understanding husband allowed me to explore other paths and I found one I knew I belong on--writing.
Back then, I had no idea "someone" was pushing me to become a writer.
I had taken creative writing classes off and on throughout my college years, because I always felt the need to write. Nothing came of it, except satisfying my own desires, until that special dream guided me to write My novel,Circles.
I joined a couple writing groups to improve my skills. I met David Lane (aka Lane Diamond), my editor, in a group. He taught me to keep going, not to get discouraged, to write and never give up. He stuck with me and gave me the confidence I needed in myself, to let go of doubt, to move forward.
My animals taught me about myself through their own lives. They showed me that I had the patience to push ever onward toward my destiny, that to give up meant the end. They helped me learn that if I willed myself to wade through all the murky waters, eventuality, I would see clearly enough to move forward.
I am currently working on Circles Two and a book of short stories of the paranormal that will have something for everyone even if you are not sure you believe. I might just change you mind!
My mixed blood lines have show me many things in life that I am truly grateful for. Thank you, Great Mystery, for the dreams, for the guidance, for the whispers in my mind.
