5.0 out of 5 stars It's the best Maldita Vecindad CD out of the 4., November 30, 1998

Maldita Vecindad's "EL CIRCO" is a mixture of many styles of music. It's pretty cool. I say it's the best of all four CDs, including the last one. A faster version of "EL CIRCO" is "EN VIVO:GIRA PATA DE PERRO" Which is cool too, because it's the live version of the songs. In other words the songs of this CD are MALDITA VECINDAD's BEST.

What can I say of this title than anybody my age that grew up in Mexico doesn't already know? But, for those of you that are not 30-something and did not grow up in Mexico, here it goes:

It is ska-type music created during the revival of Spanish-language(specially, Mexican) rock and roll. Maldita Vecindad has many "non-traditional" instruments that you would not expect in a rock group, such as trumpets or a saxophone, but also has the basic rock instruments, such as percussion and guitars.

This is one of the bands that I now appreciate much, much more than when I was listening to them as a 13-year-old. The lyrics are filled with observations of the street and the people that are struggling to make a living. For example, Solin, which I really like, is about a street performer that can tell the future, among other things. Poco de Sangre is about a street kid that is a window washer that was run over by a "rich" (i.e. somebody that owns a car) guy. The lyrics, and the music, are just fantastic.

I purchased this CD because I lost my copy along the way and because I misread the tracks on the best of CD, believing that Kumbala- about a couple that falls in love in some sort of salsa bar and which is my all-time favorite Maldita song - was not included in it, but it was.

So, for the uninitiated, I would recommend the best of, Rock En Espanol: Lo Mejor De Maldita Vecindad.

If you speak or understand a little bit of Spanish, it will be much more enjoyable. However, if you don't, don't fret: it is still a great band.
