Book Description

May 1, 1998 Brown Thrasher Books
A thinly veiled autobiographical account of one woman's austere life in the north Georgia mountains, A Circuit Rider's Wife draws on the years Corra Harris accompanied her husband in his work as a Methodist missionary. Set mostly in the fictional Redwine circuit, the novel tells of the challenges, hardships, and--aside from the occasional homemade or homegrown donations--mostly intangible rewards of itinerant country preaching.

Through the eyes of Elizabeth Thompson, the circuit rider's wife and narrator, Harris offers a witty but caring assessment of the sometimes fine differences between spiritual and merely religious folks, town and country society, backsliders and straight-and-narrow plodders, Methodists and Baptists, and heaven and hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable gem, October 9, 2010
I just read this on my new Kindle 3 (which I enjoy so much)
This is written by a pastors wife. She was an Episcopalian who married a Methodist circuit rider about 1860-70 and covers his 30 years of ministry. The purpose of the book is to bring honor to her husband and his work. She is in wonder of his personal relationship with God feeling she only went through motions. She learns from him and he from her also. But while doing this, Corra inadvertently sheds light to her faithfulness to her husband.
They end up in very poor areas of the mountains. Her descriptions of people and their lives is brilliant. I'll just say nothing much changes in human nature.
She brings you into their lives including disappointments, victories, etc.
One quote I especially enjoyed was when she mentioned her husband was covetous of only one thing: salvations. I am covetous of his zeal.
Very interesting are her and her husband, Williams, observations on the liberalizing or 'modernizing' of the Methodist church.
I have not read such a well put together biography in a very long time. As a disciple of Christ, I look forward to meeting William and Corra Harris someday.
