5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, Scholarly, and Beautiful
Such a cool book. Operating on the premise that Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture represent a high point in interior design and in carpentry in particular, the publishers have created a brilliant, annotated version of George Collins' book on circular carpentry work. The Collins book became a standard work, reprinted through the 19th and into the 20th...

2.0 out of 5 stars harumph.
Seems you'd need a degree in engineering and/or mathematics to make any sense of this book.
Big disappointment for me. Full of text, geometry and math, with not one single photograph of anything actually being built.

Useless book for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, Scholarly, and Beautiful, June 1, 2008
Such a cool book. Operating on the premise that Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture represent a high point in interior design and in carpentry in particular, the publishers have created a brilliant, annotated version of George Collins' book on circular carpentry work. The Collins book became a standard work, reprinted through the 19th and into the 20th century. But here we have a side-by-side format -- a facsimile of the original book accompanied by modern illustations and annotations. The result is somewhat interdisciplinary: a book about carpentry that has things to communicate about design, architecture and particularly the methods of communicating 3-D processes through a 2-D medium. Swoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old school techniques for folks who want "old", May 12, 2009
Anyone who does restoration or reproduction architectual woodworking needs to look at this book. It's a great reference for the old stuff seen with compound curves, curved and rounded doors, etc... A good shelf reference that will come in handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for your shop!, July 21, 2011

This book is a must for anyone doing circular and curved woodwork. It is a reperint of a text from the early 20th century. It is also the only book of it's type I've ever found.Went to this book a lot when I did Architectural Woodwork professionally.

This review is from: Circular Work in Carpentry and Joinery (Paperback)
This is not a book for the faint-hearted or mathmatically challenged individual. It's layout is very weird to say the least. One half of the page is its original content, the other half has the author's clarifications and thoughts. A very hard read to say the least. BUT, if you are serious about gaining a LOT of knowledge regarding circular woodworking, especially repetative capability, this is a must have book to get you started. It will guide you to places in your woodworking like no other and offers much for the designing mind.

If you are extremely lucky to have a master circular woodworker at your disposal, you may not want to add all the thoughts of this book to your collection. This type of work is very demanding, let the master teach you as this book may confuse its reader. BUT, very few of us have this luxury so I recommend it highly. Read a little, let it soak in, practice what is shown. Let the book set for a while then start a new chapter.
