Freshman Khiala Williams' first day at Michigan State University could indeed turn out to be the worst one of her life. You see, she met and fell madly in love with Brandon Davis, a senior, and since then the two have been inseparable. When Khaila's best friend tells her Brandon makes money illegally, she immediately wants to know the truth and confronts him. Brandon tells her everything and from that moment her love for him grows stronger. Eventually, when the mob boss finds out about Brandon and Khiala, he increases Brandon's workload and now Brandon has very little time to spend with her. Khiala decides she can visit and assist Brandon while he's working, so she convinces him to teach her the ropes. Shortly thereafter, Khiala and Brandon find themselves doing time in jail.

Tonya Shirelle has written a very fast-paced and intriguing novel laced with romance and suspense. After reading the first chapter, I was a goner and didn't put the book down until the last page was turned. Khiala and Brandon were a typical couple in a not so typical relationship. Faced with the ups and downs as any other couple, the story took on a little twist after Khiala decided to join Brandon in his illegal affairs. The ending leaves me to believe we have not seen the last of Khiala and Brandon. Highly engaging, CIRCUMSTANCES will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Easy to read, could not put it down, a suspenseful novel that I was not ashamed to have my teenage granddaughters read. Looking forward to reading more from Tonya Shirelle.

I have read several books in this genre. This is one of the first ones that actually looks at the consequences of making bad choices in life. I think the author did a great job of drawing the reader in and making them feel what the main character was going through. All around, an enjoyable read. I'd like to read more from this author.
