Product Description

In 1928, Chaplin was given an Academy Award for his versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing, and producing THE CIRCUS. This film-about a tramp who unknowingly becomes the star clown of a small time circus, falls love with the owners bareback-riding daughter and, in the end, selflessly arranges for her to marry the dashing tightrope walker work she loves-contains of Chaplins most hilarious and touching moments. Unfortunately, there has been a tendency on the part of some (perhaps because it was produced between his two masterpieces, THE GOLD RUSH and CITY LIGHTS) to underrate this exceptional motion picture. But make no mistake, this is great cinema, and in the 1970 revival for which Chaplin composed the score, there is a beautiful ballad, Swing Girl, which the artist sings himself. THE CAST Charles Chaplin (The Tramp), Mema Kennedy (The Girl), Harry Crocker (Rex, the Tightrope Walker),Allan Garcia (Circus Owner), Stanley (Head Property Man), John Rand (Assistant Property Man) Directed by Charles Chaplin Produced by Charles Chaplin Written by Charles Chaplin THE CAST Charles Chaplin, Mema Kennedy, Harry Crocker Running Time:69m Language:English Subtitle:Chinese, Spanish B&W/Stereo/1928 4:3/DVD-5

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that brings you to tears, February 4, 2009
By Tahseen Nakavi "juror" (Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin made 'The Circus' in 1928 in not so happy circumstances. He was in the midst of a divorce and things were not going right for the production. In fact, the circus ring on the sets even caught fire resulting in time and production losses. Yet through all these trials and tribulations, Chaplin came out a winner. The film was given an academy award in 1929 - an award it richly deserves. The film is a masterpiece. The shot techniques, the story, the script and not to forget the music that Chaplin scored himself. The Merna Kennedy theme is beautiful on the violas and cellos with mandolin in the background. In the 1960s release, Chaplin even wrote and sung a song, "Swing Little Girl." I have watched this film after 81 years and still it could move me to tears. The final scene is unforgettable when the caravan moves on and the tramp sits lonely on a discarded circus trunk. Hats off to Chaplin! My eyes were wet when the film was through.
