Kindergarten-Grade 3-In this wild escapade, four children pursue their silver-haired, decidedly unstaid Aunt Julie through a succession of multileveled pop-up circus scenes made from dazzlingly bright cut-paper collages with added bits of string and plastic. Each opening features an array of flaps, tabs, and other manipulatives, some of which cause several things to happen at once. Moving effects range from a lunging tiger and a clown lighting a fuse to the explosive climax in which Aunt Julie, shot from a cannon, sails through clouds of purple smoke to land neatly in her seat next to the laughing young folk. Though too fragile to survive more than a few readings, this attention-grabber integrates art, plot line, and moving parts unusually well, resulting in a wonderfully frenetic, interactive ride.

It is very attractive to reluctant readers. Appealing colors, action-packed, pop-up features, and ideal for remedial readers due to its fairly easy copy. Also great for 3 years old and up.

This unique and beautifully illustrated book is based on a real live "Aunt Julie." Meg Davenport's, Aunt Julie, saved Meg's childhood by allowing her child spirit to soar. Julie always had millions of projects going at once and her love for life and the creative spirit became contagious to her niece and nephews. This book took 3 years to design and a year to illustrate. It is a true labor of love and should be in any Pop-up collectors library of the wonders of paper and art. Robert Sabuda, the kind of paper engineering, gave Circus! a 5 STAR in his Moveable Book Newsletter.

This is my 3 year olds must-read book before bed pretty much EVERY night. I have read it so many times that I have the entire story memorized. It is definitely one of the more innovative pop-up books I've ever seen. I am looking for other similar books and stocking up on Circus! for gifts.
