Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Carolyn Keene is the author of the ever-popular Nancy Drew (All New) Girl Detective and Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series.

Macky Pamintuan was born and raised in Davao, a city in the southern Philippines. As a young child, drawing was his favorite pastime and an activity that brought him delight and satisfaction. Early on, his parents discovered that giving him paper and pencil was a sure way to keep him busy, quiet, and out of trouble. He still remembers the day when he successfully drew Mickey Mouse and Superman, a huge breakthrough and a sweet triumph. He moved to San Francisco at age 21 and in 1998 enrolled in the Academy of Art College to pursue illustration. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in December 2003 and placed on the President's Honor List. When not illustrating, Macky enjoys playing basketball, his other true passion.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd grade daugher loves the series, August 4, 2007
By
This review is from: The Circus Scare (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #7) (Paperback)
My 7 year old daughter (just finished 2nd grade) loves this series. She has read almost all of them (including the older "notebooks" editions) this summer. We don't know what we'll do for an encore when she's finished, as the regular Nancy Drew books are still a little long/ intimidating for her (each of these is only about 70 pages). She likes solving the mysteries, but also loves having the familiar characters in every book. We highly recommend them, and will give them as gifts to her friends in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big top trouble!, September 10, 2009
This review is from: The Circus Scare (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #7) (Paperback)
Synopsis: The story starts off with the Clue Crew going to River Heights Mall with Hannah to buy new swimsuits for the summer. At the mall, they are surprised to see Deirdre Shannon go into "Feathers and Beads", a store which sells fashion accessories at a discount. The find it strange to see Deirdre shopping at a discount store, when she can practically get anything she wants at no cost.

They follow her into the store, and Nancy finds Deirdre hiding behind a row of feather boas. Deirdre tells them she is having a circus in her backyard the following Sunday, and came to the store to buy some costumes. Nancy gets upset and tells her not to have a circus, because the real circus is coming to River Heights, and Nancy wants everyone to purchase ticket stubs to enter in the drawing of winning "Brownie the Bear" teddy for the Children hospital. Deirdre doesn't listen to Nancy and decides to go ahead with her plan.

Later, the circus arrives to River Heights and the Clue Crew cheer as they watch the performers walking down the street. The Clue Crew are surprised to find the real Brownie the Bear take a woman's purse from the sidewalk, but think its part of the act when they see him return it back to the owner.

However, at the opening show on Friday night, Nancy notices some of the crew members angry during their performance, because part of their costumes are missing. The clowns don't have their red noses and the elephants do not have any headdresses. The Clue Crew think that the circus did not have time to unpack, but later become really suspicious when they see more equipment missing at the following performance. After the show, they notice Deirdre conversing with a boy with dark black hair, and later see see her carrying a suitcase from the tent to her mother's car.

Is Deirdre stealing the costumes from the real circus to make hers look better? Will the Clue Crew solve this mystery before the performers start quitting the show?

Review: This story wasn't as good as the other books in the series, mainly because it only focuses on one suspect, Deirdre (and her mystery friend). If the author had included more suspects, it would have been more interesting to read. Due to this, it was pretty obvious who the culprit was in the end, as there were no surprises in the book.

Furthermore, there is no reasonable explanation provided as to why Joey was hanging out with Deirdre and helping her out with her show so much, especially if he didn't want to have anything to do with the circus. This did not make any sense to me.

The illustrations, as always are nicely drawn, and I especially enjoyed looking at how the artist drew Brownie and the elephants in the circus.

Overall, this book had a nice story to it, but it could have been better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #7 "The Circus Scare", October 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Circus Scare (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #7) (Paperback)
Great Series!! I purchased Books 1-8, for an 8-year old...she absolutely loves them. She enjoys reading, and since she is required to read 30-minutes every night for school, the chapter books come in very handy. She often finds herself reading more than 30-minutes, because she wants to finish a certain chapter, etc. The stories are great, fun, interesting, the illustrations are okay. She looks forward to following the main characters throughout the different series. Also worth mentioning, is the "activity" page within the books; they are projects that can be done later if interested, and if you enjoy doing some craft with your little ones every once in a while, it's a nice addition (sometimes she wants to do them...thankfully not always). Highly recommend the books, and will definitely be purchasing additional series. The Circus Scare (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #7)
