Book Description

August 15, 2009
The circus is in town! This exciting new volume showcases the thrilling circus photography of the American photographer Frederick W. Glasier, who photographed the circus during its 1890-1925 heyday. Now considered as masterful a chronicler of time and place as his contemporaries Atget and Sander, Glasier made photos which bring the three-ring pageant of the circus to life with an irresistible narrative rhythm. With 73 gloriously reproduced images from the 1,700 glass plate negatives from the collections of the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art at Florida State University, informative anecdotal captions by the circus historian (and co-editor of this volume) Deborah Walk, and a fascinating essay by Luc Sante.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breathtaking view of the circus July 1, 2010
This is a very beautiful book, a chronicle of what was the multimedia of its time. It gives a time machine like look into the cultural phenomenon of the circus. The book is beautifully presented and produced, and it's a wonderful experience to hold it and page through it in person.

The New Republic's review expresses it better than I ever could:

This volume was created to accompany an exhibit of classic glass plate photos by Frederick Glasier now in the collection of the Ringling Museum in Florida. Painstaking restoration has revealed the detail in each of the prints, all of which were taken on site at circus venues in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Comments by circus historians accompany the photographs.

A quality volume well worth the investment.
