I ordered the refurbished AE1000 Wireless Adapter from Electronica Direct (via Amazon) after being reassured directly by Cisco techies that their refurbished items are every bit as good as the brand new ones (at half the price!). Boy, were they wrong!!! The item arrived yesterday (after about 9 business days - a bit slower than promised). I followed the installation instructions, disabled my Smart Firewall and Anti Virus program, installed the setup program from the installation CD and then connected the adapter, but Windows 7 Home Professional (32-bit) could not properly identify the device. In fact, it said that the device malfunctioned. The set-up software kept asking me to connect the device to the USB port, even though it was already connected. Rinse, repeat! There were no blinking lights or any other signs of life on the adapter itself. It did not matter which USB port I pugged it into. It was dead, dead, dead!!! Windows Device Manager certainly noticed that "something" was plugged into the USB port because it registered an Unknown Device with the infamous yellow exclamation mark indicating trouble. Removing and reinstalling the drivers did nothing whatsoever.
One other observation, the installation disk comes with a Windows 7 Tools folder, but it seems like it is only for the 64-bit version and not the 32-bit version. I do not know why this is and since I could not install the adapter, I could not check out the ramifications, if any.
Bottom Line: I contacted Cisco Online Tech Support (routed to India, of course), but they were not very helpful and did not have any meaningful suggestions so I contacted Elecronica Direct Customer Service and they were very nice and apologetic about it. They offered to overnight a replacement. I will post again to confirm if, indeed, I receive it overnight and also with an update if the replacement works or not. Stay tuned....
