N speeds on dual bands April 12, 2011

This is a good item, if you're having speed/connection issues after install you might need to tweak your router depending on your situation.

To understand how this will perform in your specific situation you have to know something about networking.

The the factors that influence wifi speed are:
1-5Ghz N has trouble going through walls (the denser the wall the worse it gets).
2-using mixed mode(g and n) is more likely to bring down connection speed and cause connection issues.
3-having a lot of "wireless" activity can also bring lower speeds and connection problems(you can fiddle with this by chosing a channel that performs better).

I have a cisco E3000 (N on 5Ghz and N on 2.4Ghz, both with a different Network ID)and a connected belkin N150 as an access point for G on 2.4Ghz with also, its own network ID.
I have devices with N on 2.4Ghz, G on 2.4Ghz end with the AE1000, N on 5Ghz.

This setup gives optimal speeds and solid connections after finding the channels with the best performance(least interference from wireless noise).

My walls are "pre-war" (cement on lathe)and thus 5Ghz(and to lesser extent 2.4Ghz) "killers". There is one long hall and I use the AE1000 to connect to the router at the other end of the apt..
Between the living room (where I want to stream with the AE1000) and the room where the router is located there are 3 cement on lathe walls and I live in NYC so there is always a lot of wireless competition(20+ networks broadcasting their id and surely some that are not broadcasting their id, wireless phones, microwave ovens, etc.).

My speed readings are:
-N-5Ghz-AE1000 inside L.room ->~118Mbps
-N-5Ghz-AE1000 by hall->270-300Mbps (13Mbps before finding a clear channel)
-N-2.4Ghz -AE1000 inside L.room->~180Mbps
-N-2.4Ghz -laptop inside L.room near window->180-240Mbps

So I just installed this by the hall(L.room doorway) with an extra usb extender cable and everything is speedy.

So this works great (when you know the limitations).

If you are having connection and/or speed issues, try to
-avoid "mixed mode" on a radio
-separate your wireless networks by speed
-switch channels until you find one that's the least conmgested/gives the highest speeds.
-check that your N mode is set to use 20Mhz AND 40Mhz Channel width.

Hope this helps someone.

Refurbished Cisco AE1000 February 26, 2011

After having installed a Linksys E2000 wireless router and not being able to connect to my Compaq laptop I was told by Linksys customer support that I needed an AE1000 for my laptop. I decided to get the refurbished AE1000 because of the price and the fact that it had a 90 day warranty. I do not regret this decision at all. The unit looks brand new and works fine. Installation was a breeze and quick. Given the price differential between this unit and a new unit, this is a super deal.

I ordered the refurbished AE1000 Wireless Adapter from Electronica Direct (via Amazon) after being reassured directly by Cisco techies that their refurbished items are every bit as good as the brand new ones (at half the price!). Boy, were they wrong!!! The item arrived yesterday (after about 9 business days - a bit slower than promised). I followed the installation instructions, disabled my Smart Firewall and Anti Virus program, installed the setup program from the installation CD and then connected the adapter, but Windows 7 Home Professional (32-bit) could not properly identify the device. In fact, it said that the device malfunctioned. The set-up software kept asking me to connect the device to the USB port, even though it was already connected. Rinse, repeat! There were no blinking lights or any other signs of life on the adapter itself. It did not matter which USB port I pugged it into. It was dead, dead, dead!!! Windows Device Manager certainly noticed that "something" was plugged into the USB port because it registered an Unknown Device with the infamous yellow exclamation mark indicating trouble. Removing and reinstalling the drivers did nothing whatsoever.

One other observation, the installation disk comes with a Windows 7 Tools folder, but it seems like it is only for the 64-bit version and not the 32-bit version. I do not know why this is and since I could not install the adapter, I could not check out the ramifications, if any.

Bottom Line: I contacted Cisco Online Tech Support (routed to India, of course), but they were not very helpful and did not have any meaningful suggestions so I contacted Elecronica Direct Customer Service and they were very nice and apologetic about it. They offered to overnight a replacement. I will post again to confirm if, indeed, I receive it overnight and also with an update if the replacement works or not. Stay tuned....
