Book Description

Cisco's CCIE certification is today's most lucrative, sought-after networking credential: the gold standard for networking professionals. In Cisco Certification, Second Edition, world-class CCIE instuctor and consultant, Bruce Caslow focuses on the most challenging aspect of the CCIE exam process: the hands-on labs. This bestseller has been fully updated to reflect Cisco's latest technologies and exam objectives, with new coverage of VoIP, IP multicast, and many other key topics. Bruce Caslow focuses on providing in-depth, advanced explanations of Cisco network configuration and troubleshooting -- not just Q&As. This new edition adds extensive coverage of Quality of Service, IP multicast, and voice traffic routing, including Voice Over IP, Voice Over ATM, Voice Over Frame Relay. It also delivers expanded coverage of two key protocols: BGP for connecting internal networks to Internet Service Providers; and OSPF for internal enterprise internetworking. It includes even more lab exercises, "Can You Spot the Issues" challenges, test-taking strategies and day-to-day guidance for problem resolution.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

As author Andrew Bruce Caslow so eloquently states, Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIEs is focused solely on providing a structured roadmap to Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) certification. At the very least, it will help you master the portion of certification that pertains to configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting the Cisco equipment referenced in the title. A massive volume--the table of contents alone is 34 pages long--the coverage within ranges from general guidelines for port configuration to information on bridging nonroutable traffic to details on navigating the Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS).

As is common to this genre, the book is replete with configuration commands, diagrams, and tables. However, it maintains a more pragmatic tone than most as each chapter ends with some or all of the following elements: a summary, a professional development checklist, references for further study, and a "Can You Spot the Issues?" section containing networking word problems. The answers to these problems are found in one of the book's appendices. Also included is a section devoted to test preparation and test-taking techniques that details the skills assessed during the CCIE exam as well as commonly encountered testing landmines. An admirable effort, this granular but well-organized tome certainly appears to meet its stated goal. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

Preface

For the next ten years, the opportunities for internetwork professionals will be immense. However, the challenge of possessing the proper knowledge base and skill set will be faced by every internetworking professional. The challenge is two-fold: (1) how does one develop his internetworking knowledge base and skill sets to the highest possible level and (2) how does one stay current in this rapidly changing field! Cisco Systems offers a solution: the Cisco IOS (Internetworking Operating System). By mastering the Cisco IOS, an internetworking professional can supply virtually any internetworking solution. The IOS has its origins in the routing world but has expanded to LAN switching, ATM switching, multilayer switching, voice-data integration and security.

From an internetwork education perspective, the IOS configuration set, show commands and debugging tools provide a technician with a valuable insight into how internetworking technologies operate. For example, having access to IOS debugging tools and a network protocol analyzer such as a Network Associates Sniffer in a testbed environment allows a technician to develop a strong technical understanding of how internetwork protocols operate at a high level of technical detail. IOS debugging tools should be used with extreme caution in a production internetwork. However, in an educational environment, IOS debugging tools should be used to enhance the internetwork education process. One of the goals of this book is to demonstrate how debug output can be used to enhance the internetwork education process.

A broader goal of this book is to demonstrate the power of the Cisco IOS from both a production and education perspective. An internetwork professional that learns the IOS well enough to attain CCIE certification has developed an internetworking knowledge base and skill set that will allow him to accelerate his learning of other internetworking technologies. Therefore, mastering the Cisco IOS and the related internetworking technologies to the point of attaining CCIE certification should be viewed as a foundational beginning rather than an end. Once you have attained your CCIE, you must look ahead to what new internetworking topics you will master. However, as you learn new topics, you will apply the precious internetworking analysis skills you developed while you prepared for CCIE certification.

In sum, I hope this book assists in developing the reader's internetwork analysis skills. By developing methodologies to think like a quality internetworking professional, you will be able to rapidly adapt to the constant changes occurring in this industry. By developing methodologies to think like a quality internetworking professional, you will be better prepared to attain your CCIE. Therefore, a clear road to optimizing your internetworking analysis skills is mastering the Cisco IOS. Once you learn how to speak IOS and think IOS to the highest level of technical detail, improved internetworking analysis skills come along with the territory. Good luck on your journey to CCIE certification!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe that Michael Wosnicki has ever read this book, April 15, 2001
That guy gives every book a 5. He is a paid jerk to rate all books 5 stars. Please make him stop posting reviews! He wouldn't know a csu/dsu if it hit him in the head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding For CCIE Lab Planning AND The Written Exam, September 6, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have just finished the first of several readings I'm sure I'll be giving this book, and my hat is off to Mr. Caslow. A tremendous work and very helpful in planning the hard work ahead to becoming a CCIE. After all, doing the work is great, but you have to have a plan first!

I've noticed several reviews remarking that this isn't a good book for the IE written. Having just passed that exam, I respectfully disagree. While that is certainly not the focus of the book, I saw several topics addressed that cleared up some questions I had while taking the written.

I would highly recommend that if you're planning for the written IE, go ahead and purchase this book now. After all, if you're serious about IE lab prep, you'll be buying the book anyway. Put it to work for you sooner than later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Quite Like It!, January 28, 2000
As a qualified CCNP/CCDP gearing up to take the CCIE lab, I have found that this book is invaluable. Sitting next to a CCIE that used this book to help prepare for the lab I am confident that I can also benefit from the book.

I have noticed that there are a few reviews that don't recommend this book at all. The main concern is the fact that it appears not to go into enough depth with regard to packet structure, handshaking processes etc. However, by the time you come to taking the CCIE certifications you will already have passed the CCNP and CCDP. By this time you will be profocient with the theory behind the technologies the book deals with. Therefore the book can focus on pointing you in the right direction with regards to the thought process you should exhibit when facing the lab and real-world scenarios.

The format of the book is such that it shows you key point and configuration issues, and gives you tips on those things to look out for and bear in mind when dealing with each of the technologies put forward in each chapter. At the end of each chapter I have found that it is a good idea to set up your own scenarios and try as many different configurations as possible. This will reinforce all the information put forward in the text. This is important as the main foe that we will face in the lab is time. If you know how to configure everything initially, without spending time searching the CD in the lab, then you should be onto a winner. This book can prepare you for this but only in conjunction with a fair amount of initial knowledge and a lot of hours spent in the evening tinkering with configurations and make and break scenarios.

With this book you will need a little less luck to take the CCIE lab as you will be a lot better prepared.
