More About the Author

Many folks know me as a slightly hyperactive presenter and "Glenda, the Good Witch." After taking a break from writing for a while, I'm now back in the swing of things - with drafts of writing projects cluttering up by office space. We'll see if they get edited down to a business-card worth of writing - depends on the "Margarita count."

Here's the basic bio:

Laura Chappell is a highly-energetic speaker and author of numerous industry titles on network communications, analysis and security. Laura has presented to thousands of State, Federal and international law enforcement officers, judicial members, engineers, network administrators, technicians and developers.

Ms. Chappell is a member of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA) and an Associate Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) since 1989. Her blend of humor, personal experiences, energy and clarity have earned her a top spot as an industry speaker at Microsoft, Novell, Hewlett-Packard, High Technology Crime Investigation Association and US Court conferences.

In 2007, Ms. Chappell founded Wireshark University, an educational firm devoted to teaching the art of wiretapping/communications interception, network forensics, digital deception and decoys, traceback and reconnaissance.

Laura's network analysis, troubleshooting and security training is available online through the All Access Pass at chappellU.com and through customized online/onsite analysis and training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Prep For CIT And On-The-Job, March 7, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting (The Cisco Press Certification and Training Series) (Hardcover)
I used this book along with three others to prepare for CIT, and as the exam drew near, I found myself using this one almost exclusively.

I thought the book did an excellent job explaining and illustrating the concepts. There is an excellent balance of command syntax explanation, screen output text, and explanatory text. Significant portions of command output are highlighted and explained clearly and thoroughly.

I also welcomed the amount of detail, which came in handy on the exam and in real life. Details such as the breakdown of frames in different protocols are left out of a lot of study guides, but that's the kind of information I want. It's better to present the information to the reader and let the reader decide to what level he/she needs to go, rather than the author deciding what the reader needs to know.

The appendixes were also thorough in their presentation of the material. Don't skip them.

I also liked the question format for most of the chapters, although for most chapters there weren't that many of them. There is one section that simply presents screen readout and challenges you to find the problems. That's the kind of question you need to be able to answer to pass CIT. If you are looking for "A-B-C-D" questions, you won't find them here. You're challenged to come up with commands that perform certain tasks, which is what you need to be able to do in the first place.

I would strongly recommend using more than one text for this exam (and for all Cisco exams), but if you use only one book, it really should be this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's enough to pass!, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting (The Cisco Press Certification and Training Series) (Hardcover)
Today I passed Cisco Support 2.0 exam and got 864 (passing score was less then 700). I did it using only this book as study material. If you're looking for a single book - that's it!

Some comments. This book is based on Cisco training course and it gives you very good explanation of Cisco vision of troubleshooting. It's a serious book written by experienced proffecionals and it really helps you in your work not only in passing the test.

Why did I give 4 stars not 5? First, there are a lot of annoyng mistakes like illustration content may be completly different from its title. They are annoyng but not dangerous. It looks like technical editors checked all commands and their explanation but didn't look at pictures and other additional stuff at all.

Another reason that it was included in CCNP preparation library but it doesn't include CD, test examples, test description and other standard features for such books. I had to spend few hours in Internet searching for the exam details and questions samples.

I'm pretty satisfied by this book. Probably you can find something better, but this one is enough to pass test too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Preparation for the CIT Examination, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting (The Cisco Press Certification and Training Series) (Hardcover)
I used this book as my primary source of study for the CIT examination. The material is presented in a structered manner. The topics build upon each other as your knowledge increases. Review questions ensure that the information was retained, since they are very vague! We know for a fact the reason Cisco tests are difficult is because they never ask a direct question. I would also recommend "Internetworking Troubleshooting Handbook" isbn: 1-57870-024-8 to enhance your troubleshooting technique.
