I purchased the Linksys Antenna Stand for TNC Connectors AS2TNC along with a Linksys HGA7T High-Gain Antenna Kit for TNC Connectors. I live in Manhattan and wanted to be able to access my wireless Internet connection while in the park outside my apartment building.
I live on the 11th floor of steel, brick and concrete heavy building. I had zero reception from the park outside my apartment with the standard Linksys wireless router I owned - even though I placed it on the sill of a window that overlooked the park. Between the window screen, glass, etc there wasn't enough signal strength to get the connection going. I figured that I would buy these items as an experiment. I attached the two high gain antennas that came in the kit to this base. I then placed the stand on my external air conditioner and taped it down. I went out to the park where I now had a straight line-of-sight path to the antenna. My laptop (IBM T40 with internal antenna) had 80% signal strength at about 150 feet - amazing I figured I would push the envelope a bit and walked in to the park a bit. At 100 yards I still had 50% signal strength. After that the signal strength dropped off pretty quickly. A 100 yards though is amazing. My techie friends are amazed at this range, which far exceeds what Linksys advertises. I now place the antenna out on the underside of my air conditioner whenever I want access while outside - I have crazy-glued a couple of medium-sized magnets to the base and it holds well. I am not sure what the range would be without the high gain antennas. Who cares though - the combo of these two items works beyond what I could have reasonably expected.

increase the antenna height and the signal gets through,

My Wireless network had some major dead spots, by relocating the antennas I was able to improve the coverage. This product gives an alternative to moving the wireless router around and gives you the ability to put the router where you want it without concern of blocking the signal

I bought this item for my WRT54GL with stock antennas running DD-WRT v23 SP2. The router is in the corner-most portion of the apartment, placed on the floor and is, unfortunately, covered on 3 sides by the modem (left), the PC (right), and the printer (top). Awful positioning, but that was the only place I could put it. I was getting little to no signal in my room (opposite corner, 30 ft direct distance, with walls and shelves and whatnot in between) and my wireless connection kept dropping whenever I do connect. I figured I'd give this stand a try before buying the expensive high gain antennas (HGA7T). In any case, I'm going to need the stand as the HGA7T won't fit underneath the printer. I mounted the antenna as high as the cable would permit, and now, I'm getting Good to Excellent signal in my room. That's with the stock antennas and only 48mW transmit power so the router runs cooler, too. I believe Linksys default is around 70-80mW.
The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because I think it's a tiny bit expensive for just cable and plastic. The cable could've been a bit longer, too.

I was having problems with the fact that the wireless network was notreaching one of the rooms in the back part of the house and after installing the stand at a higher altitude the coverage of the wireless network extended tremendously. I can go to the front and back of the house with decent wireless coverage.

No low ratings because somebody didn't notice the antennas were not included in the photo or description... Only a 5 Star was they perform extremely well. I put a Range Extender in the middle and wireless reception is exceptionally well in the shop upstairs, a separate building.

Works really well. I'm using the larger, "aftermarket" size antennas and can mount the antennas where they give me the best connection. Also, I did a "custom" mounting (upside down from a rafter) and had to pop the base off the stand for a minute; found they have a metal plate in the stand to act as a ground plane :). My signal strength on the Linksys monitor software went from the 30% range to the mid-50's. Previously, I'd be knocked off the air; sometimes for hours at a time. Now the signal stays at 8-14 db above the noise level and and data usually transfers at 36mbps (receive) and sometimes runs up to the 54mbps G max. Did not bother trying the stand with the original, smaller Linksys antennas that came on the router, a standard Linksys 54G NOT the speed booster or N, as I already bought and was using the better antennas. The computer is connected with a Linksys USB adapter (no internal card) using a longer USB cable, 10 ft, than came with the adapter for better placement. Setup works well, as mentioned above, at an almost clear, open air Line-Of-Sight (one low angle bounce of about 30 degrees) range of about 190 ft. to the USB adapted desktop PC; and throughout the house at 48/54mbps on a laptop with built-in wireless G.

This is simply a device that allows you to move you antennas to a place 6ft away from you router. It doesn't come with a router or antennas of any sort, but it doesn't claim to either. I recently built an entertainment center where the only place to put my router was very close to the floor. This product allowed me to move the antennas out of a boxed in shelf and place them on top of the cabinets. This solved all my connection needs. I had already been using the high gain antennas but they still need to be high and relatively unobstructed. This antenna stand achieves just that. My only nitpick is I would have liked just a little bit more chord.

I bought this to hide away my router and NAS, which it does nicely.
More importantly I think is that I was able to place the antennas higher for better line-of-sight to my other network devices. I do wish the included 6-ft cable could be just a teeny bit thinner. |
