1.0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Get it to Work
I couldn't get it to work with my Windows ME computer, although it installed just fine on my Windows 98 computer. There was no mention of Windows ME on their web site or with their drivers, so I suspect there's an interface issue they haven't sorted out. I was not pleased with their support -- noone answered their help line and 6 e-mails to their designated e-mail...

I bought this kit to connect two computers (one running Win2k the other running Win 98) and ADSL internet connection.

When I got it, i opened it up, and was surprised to see it came with Descent 3, detailed manuals for easy installation. But no Win2k drivers included, no problem though I went to there web site and downloaded them in seconds. Installing the NIC in the Win2k system was a breeze. The problem came the my Win98 unit but not because it was Win98 but because it had a AMD chip. After fixing that problem (PCI/IRQ Steering with AMD as stated in the NIC manual if you search) Everything went smooth and can be.

I would have given 5 stars it the AMD problem was more than just a foot note in the manual. All and all one great networking kit at a good price that will allow me to add more computer later.

I transfered a 214 meg file in 1:36 (2255.7 kB/Sec Avg 3191.7kB/Sec max)

4.0 out of 5 stars Network In a Box, October 8, 2000

After spending several weeks doing my home work I choose Linksys FESWSK5 switched 10/100. I am connecting two computers one with pentium 233 and the 2nd with an Amd k6/450 3d processor. Knowing a litte about computers and how to find the drivers on a cd or a floopy helps.I did not have any trouble with setting up either computer. the AMD computer also has a high speed network card in it as well, I thought that I might have trouble with the cable modem and network card but I did not.I would recommend that you spend the time to do your home work, on the type of network you want, and spend a little extra money for the network switched 10/100 instead of the network hub. I think that even A first time user could get their network up and running if they brought this network in a box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly, a network in a box. Just add computers, August 28, 2000
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys FESWSK5 EtherFast Switched 10/100 Network In a Box (Personal Computers)
For once, I was actually completely happy with a computer product bought retail. I put it on 2 machines running win98 and it went literally without problem. The kit provides you with all the hardware, software, and manuals that any semi-computer literate person will need. I highly recommend this product to anybody who has need for a stable and easy to install network. Not to mention it's really fast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value and performance!, December 5, 2000

This is really an excellent package. I wanted to note that the picture you see on Amazon.com is of version 1.0 of this set, but you'll actually receive version 2.0 (newer blue hub, lots of extra software including Activision's Soldier of Fortune game). This kit is perfect for sharing a DSL connection, and I had it up and running in no time.

I was not pleased with their support -- noone answered their help line and 6 e-mails to their designated e-mail address went unanswered.

Whereas I'm unhappy with Linksys, Amazon gets 5 stars because they couldn't have been more helpful and timely with the return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, quick and easy install!!!!!, March 4, 2002

Okay...I was a little leary. After reading all the reviews on this product and several similar products I was worried. I had seen where some had trouble with AMD PC's as well as the WinME operating system. Well both the PC's I wanted to network are AMD and one is running WinME. I ordered the Network in a box, with the thought in the back of my mind that I would probably have to return it.
However the install went great and the network was literally up and running in an hour. The instuctions are very clear, although they don't mention WinMe at all. I just installed both as Win98, but I did have to searcht he setup disk for the NIC drivers on the WinME machine.

Next we had a cable modem installed. Connected the modem to the switches uplink port, installed the sysgate software that came with the network on one machine as host and the other as client and both pc's had simultaneous Internet access!

I am a complete novice to networking so I was quite timid about all of this.

Completely happy with this product!

I've been changing operating systems a lot lately and have had no problem connecting two ME's, a ME and a W2K and a ME and an XP.

There's no much to do, really. Just hook it up and run the Home Network Connection Wizards. Assign the shared drives, printers, etc. and you're done. The manual is helpful and easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Windows ME worked for me, June 8, 2001
By
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys FESWSK5 EtherFast Switched 10/100 Network In a Box (Personal Computers)
I just installed this product today and connected one WinME PC to one Win98 PC. It worked very well to follow the Win98 directions for both installations. I must admit I was a bit skeptical it would work after I read the reviews here and looked at the Linksys web site. The product web page listed ME as compatible, but there were no other ME references after doing a search on the site.

Anyway, I think this product works well. So far it's been running for an hour :). I highly recommend it.

I bought the kit a couple month ago and i really cant complain about it. It works great and was easy to install on my Me and 98 pcs. I would highly recommend it to anybody lookin' for a starter kit. And honestly, where else do you get a switched kit for 79 bucks?
