Nifty little tool but the door will break,
By
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys USB200M EtherFast USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter (Personal Computers)
Its a nifty little tool and when I saw it at office depot; I bought it because i liked the design.
however, the design gets in the way of functionality. The nifty little door on the back is very prone to breaking and mine broke when it fell on the ground (hey this is travel accessory; it is supposed to fall on the ground). it would not have been so bad if it was just the door that will break. The device is designed in such a way that there is no way to hold the ethernet wire in place if the door is broken !! so its now useless for me. please dont buy it. the door will break (and soon) and then it will be no good.

Doesn't hold the ethernet cable securely.,

I bought this to use with my TiVO. It works fine when it's connected, but it doesn't hold the ethernet cable securely enough. The slightest movement will break the connection with the unit. When my frustration level exceeds my annoyance level at having wasted my money on this thing, I'll buy something more sturdier.

Get a different one,

It worked instantly out of the box, but the hinged door is very cheap and fragile. If you look at the picture real closely, you see that you plug the cord into a flimsy hinged trap-door. When the door breaks or pops the hinges, the cord drops out. I had to replace it with a stronger direct plug-in type.

Not Perfect, but not as bad...,

This review is from: Cisco-Linksys USB200M EtherFast USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter (Personal Computers)
I got this for the sole purpose of connecting my Tivo to the network so I could take advantage of Tivo ToGo. The online reviews were the only thing that made me a little shakey about this, however, it is one of only two adapters currently said to be comapatible by Tivo.
I have to say that I have no problems with it whatsoever. Although the door is a bit weak, it is no where near as bad as some of these reviews. Plugging the ethernet into it took a bit of wiggling, but it isn't going anywhere. I've been using it to transfer things to my computer with out problems. Basically, unless you plan on throwing the thing around before hooking it up, it works perfectly. Connection with TiVo couldn't have been easier, and is small and stays out of the way.

Far too fragile,

This little widget does a basic job as a USB network adapter, but its design is way too fragile to be practical. Your RJ45 cable doesn't really lock into any socket: you sort of wedge it under a little door at a 45 degree angle, for a very finicky connection that'll come loose at the slightest touch. And, after only a dozen connections, the door on mine popped off and the whole unit basically disintegrated in my hand, unrepairable. Find another brand with a less gimmicky design.

I bought this for my TiVo Series2 DVR and it did not work because it was version 2. There is no way to tell from the outside ot the box what version you are buying. The way I found out I had version 2 (besides the fact that TiVo did not recognize it) was to look at the CD inside the box. Apparently version 1 will work which as of today, you can buy from the online TiVo store. There are rumors that a patch will be available from TiVo for the version 2 adapter but no promises are given as to when the update will be available. I ended up buying a "Netgear USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Adapter FA120" (CD says version 4.0) instead and the TiVo recognized it right away. Linksys is LAME for rolling out a new version of this adapter (which has reduced capabilities) and then not even marking the box. LAME LAME LAME!!!!!!!!!

Mine works fine with Tivo Series2,

Dispite seeing many reviews on here that said this product does not work with Series2, I decided to buy it based on a few success stories, and the fact that Tivo recommends this one. It looks like the March update fixed it. Mine is working just fine. The Tivo detected it, and all is well.
I see what many of the other reviewers mean about the cheap design. If I were unplugging and replugging this thing often, I am sure the little door would break off. But since its going to be sitting on the back of the Tivo for ages, it really does not matter. I would not buy this product for use on a laptop or other portable device. But for the Tivo it seems to fit my needs.

Does Not Work With TIVO,

Check the CD - you'll find there that this is version 2.0 which does not work with TIVO. You have to order the Linksys vers. 1 from TIVO.

I love this little thing. It's the size of a pin drive and has a cap with a clip to put on your shirt or wherever. I used it to connect my Series2 TiVO to my home network. I plugged it in to my TiVO and hub and that was that. Has worked perfectly ever since. It's only possible downfall is that the ethernet port has a little flimsy door that looks like it could break easily. I am just careful when I plug it in.

yes the latch door is flimsy. yes the angle at which the ethernet jack plugs into it is odd. but it works great. and there is a usb cable extender, which u should definitely use, because without it i think it would put too much pressure on the usb port.
when i got it, i installed it on my laptop with the software just to make sure it had the latest firmware/hardware updates on it. and while i did get the blue screen of death after install, once i restarted, it was sending and receiving packets with absolutely no problem, and i was surfing with it plugged into my laptop. BUT, i cant surf with it for more than a few minutes. i have no idea why, but i get the blue screen of death repeatedly when its plugged into my laptop. but i bought it for tivo, so i was ready to use it with my tivo. all tivo literature says u HAVE TO HAVE a standard landline to complete initial setup. this is simply NOT TRUE. here is what u do: 1. plug in the usb-2-ethernet adapter before powering on tivo. of course, make sure its hooked up to a broadband connection somehow. 2. power up tivo, go thru setting up everything on your tivo 3. when it says it has to dial out to complete installation, enter in dialing prefix ",#401" -dont forget the comma. 4. it dials out, downloads anything it needs a whole lot faster than on a regular land line, and BOOM youre good to go.
