4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best price-capability matches in USB clients
I only give this device four stars because it is not the absolute best USB client device on the market. It only offers about 32 milliwatts (mW) of output power, which is disappointing since it is the type of USB client you are unlikely to use while on battery power so preservation of battery life, through lower output power levels, doesn't make a lot of sense...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a High Gain Antenna system
I bought this to replace a wusb11, mainly because the Linksys site and product description state it has a HIGH GAIN ANTENNA. While it preforms well and was a snap to setup. I could see no difference between the two, reception wise. I could have bought a wusb54g and got the same results for less money. One other thing is that is is quite delicate when used without is's...

This review is from: Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter ( WUSB54GP-BP ) (Personal Computers)
I only give this device four stars because it is not the absolute best USB client device on the market. It only offers about 32 milliwatts (mW) of output power, which is disappointing since it is the type of USB client you are unlikely to use while on battery power so preservation of battery life, through lower output power levels, doesn't make a lot of sense.

In addition, the antenna is a simple 2 dBi gain antenna, giving less than 50 mW total output power. However, with these complaints it is VERY important to consider the price: less than $30. That's a great price by any standard.

In my tests, this device was able to maintain consistent connections with a Linksys WAP54g access point up to about 60-70 feet. After that point it began to be very inconsistent. This was inside a building structure with walls and such. In the open air tests (in my yard with no walls or obstacles) this distance expanded to 140-170 feet.

I hope this helps you in your decision making.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Mobile Access Point, January 23, 2005
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter ( WUSB54GP-BP ) (Personal Computers)
I just picked this item up from Wal-Mart for my gf's old slow computer and I must say it was up and running in a snap. All of the features in a W-NIC are there and it can be moved around very easily. The stand is espically nice when on the road. I would recommened buying 2 suctions cups for the back so you can place it on glass. The only reason I did'nt give it 5 stars was becuase of the price. Buy hey Cisco owns Linksys now and you know your buying quality when you pay a little extra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, Fast, Simple, Cheap and Excellent, May 1, 2006

I have set up a number of linksys systems. It is my preferred network for home and small business. I really liked this portable adapter. Some of the reviews were not great, but I found it very easy, fast and simple to install. The connection is excellent. We are using these in a small business covering three buildings on a 3 acre property. These adapters are connecting through a linksys range extender in one building to the router in a building approximately 50 yards away. We are having no problems. Can easily recommend, especially for $25. One negative. Bought two through Amazon/Tiger Direct. If I had waited two weeks, I could have avoided shipping through amazon alone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sort of works but has issues, September 23, 2005
This review is from: Cisco-Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter ( WUSB54GP-BP ) (Personal Computers)
I am using this device on 5 dell gx270 computers right next to each other connecting to a Linksys Wrt54g router within 20 feet of them. We bought these devices to replace similar 802.11b devices. It shows excellent signal strength but a connection speed of 1mbps! I am using the most recent firmware and drivers on all devices. I also have 2 other Dell computers right next to these using the Dell wireless cards ordered with them and they show a connecting speed of 54 MBPS. I did a speed test and the ones using the Linksys WUSB54GP show actually running about half the speed of the Dell 54g devices. Trying different channels did not help. If you have a similar setup, I do not recommend these.
Another issue is the orentation of these devices when inserted in the USB connection without using the stand. You cannot twist it in all directions to enable it to fit flush with the machine.

This WUSB54GP-BP from Linksys is a great little adapter but don't let size fool you, the fold up antenna works great to pull in extra signal, very easy to install

I recently installed the adapter on an old Win 98SE computer in my daughter's room. This room is on the other side of the house (large) from the room my router is in. Easy setup. Previous adapter's signal was always weak or non-existant. The Linksys reaches the router with a 60% signal strength and 2400 Kb/sec. download time with a cable modem. Plenty fast for my daughter. It may cost more, but in my opinion, is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for your laptop, but no longer works with TiVo Series 2 DT, May 10, 2006

I bought this specifically in May 2006 for my new Series 2 TiVo DT and at first it worked perfectly.

BUT, after the recent July 2006 TiVo software update, this Wireless adapter has been giving me problems. It has been causing my TiVo to restart at random times while viewing recordings. You are better off just getting the TiVo branded adapter - TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter for Series2 DVR (AG0100). I'd have to change my rating to 3 stars to reflect this. Still works great on my laptops though!
