I bought this for regular home use. My old wireless router was starting to intermittently fail as more and more wireless devices got added to the home network, necessitating reboots, and I thought a more serious router would perform better than the cheap commodity home routers.

This unit has performed reliably in that regard---it has not hung up once in the couple of months or so it has been in service. It does the basic Wi-Fi and routing functions well.

But the product does have some rough edges. The administrative UI is a bit clunky. The product has some cool features---but I couldn't get all of them to work. In particular, it offers the ability to set access policies, allowing one, for example, to block access to a particular website at certain times of day for certain users (a potentially handy feature for families), but it looks it is going to take a firmware fix from Cisco to get that working as expected. The router also lets you set up to 4 separate Wi-Fi networks, letting you easily set up a guest WiFi network.

Hi Anon,

We're sorry to hear that you had some issues with the RV110W. As you've mentioned, a firmware upgrade could address some of the issues you've experienced. You can download the most recent software here: http://bit.ly/tPlNi0. You can also find the release notes here: http://bit.ly/trab0L. We hope this helps. Thanks for your feedback!

I was really happy to find a router with these features. While overall I am quite happy with this device for my small office, there are some features that are just missing or not quite up to task.

Pros
Really good throughput on a 50Mb Internet connection.
Interface is easy to get up to speed and manage.
Good selection of Firewall Options.
Wi-Fi range and throughput have been good.
Built in VPN

Cons
The QuickVPN is just not a very good client. It forces you to use Windows Firewall and does not allow you to use a Third Party Firewall

You can't point your VPN clients to use the internal DNS. This means if you try to use DNS name resolution for your internal servers or devices it will not work. This is a major oversight as you can't expect your users to always remember IP addresses to access the share drives or printers, or if they have mapped drives they will not work unless you do it by IP. It amazes me a networking company like Cisco would overlook something so simple yet so important.

Does not play well with third part VPN. Since we had the above mentioned issues with QuickVPN we decided to just use out OpenVPN server. Well, Cisco will not allow it to work even if you forward the ports and allow the traffic.

Overall
It is a good firewall and router, but it is a poor VPN device with far too basic of features for any good use. If you just want to be secure the VPN will work, but if you want to actually work you will have to manipulate it in ways that are nor really best practice to make it work for your users.

Hi Clintre,

We're sorry to hear about your issues with the RV110W router. We understand the limitations of the QuickVPN and are looking to address those issues in the future. The RV110W is intended for more basic users looking to use PPTP clients. For more robust IPSec VPN client support, we suggest the RV120W. It has hardware-based encryption allowing much faster performance and a greater number of IPSec tunnels. We also suggest you download the latest version of QuickVPN from the Cisco website by visiting cisco.com/go/quickvpn. For other users who want to securely connect their iPhone, iPad, or iTouch device to the network, they can use the built-in PPTP VPN client and connect to the RV110W. We hope this is helpful to you. Thanks for your feedback.

This router must be restarted 2-3 times every day on top of the 2-3 times each day it crashes and restarts itself. The issues with the router are related to Port Forwarding and are known by Cisco. Cisco has released firmware upgrades claiming the issues have been fixed but there's been no improvement in the routers stability. It's been a few months since we've purchased this router and we are now looking for an alternative as it's unusable. You would think Cisco would know how to make a router but after waiting months for a resolution and trying many firmware upgrades to get basic Port Forwarding to work on this router we've had to throw in the towel. If you need only basic routing then get a less expensive router. If you need more advanced features like Port Forwarding this router is not stable enough to get the job done.
