1.0 out of 5 stars Review carefully before buying
I was shopping for Long's highly acclaimed Cisco Intntwk. and Tbst. when I came across this book. I would like to urge the reader to review the content carefully before you buy it. The author spend the first 90 pages on introductory stuff like OSI, LAN, WAN, switch, hub, before talking about Cisco router configuration. The content is not particularly outstanding - and...

Suddenly our network manager left the company, and with that I found myself wearing another yet another hat. I was dropped into running the network, and building a router for the for an office opening in 30 days. After the anxiety attack passed, I picked up a copy of this book. It was truly a lifesaver. The book is written in a clear and concise format, covering what you need to know, and how to do it. It did not try to assault my intelligence, as the writer cover basic material in such a way that you do not feel as technically inept as you really are. The book was fun to read, and well written. I was able finished in about 3 weeks. Thanks to this book I was able to finish that remote office router, and have now embarked on the road to Cisco certification.

I strongly recommend this book if you plan to make the jump from computers to networking. .

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Book, June 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
With this crystal-clear reference, networking professionals can cut through the complexities and gain a thorough understanding of the features and functions used to successfully configure Cisco routers. This book includes step-by-step coverage of how to create router configuration files from scratch and build multiprotocol networks from TCP/IP to OSPF and BGP plus traffic management techniques for AppleTalk, IPX, SMDS, and ATM Configuration.

Not only is this book great as an on-the-job reference, but it also prepares you for Cisco certification by presenting all the fundamental concepts and commands in an easy-to-understand text.

5.0 out of 5 stars The more I read the more I kept reading., November 30, 2000
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
Starting off this book is 25 pages just covering the OSI model and then 55 pages on router configuration and both are very good. Moving along to TCP/IP addressing is given fair coverage, needing more coverage of the CIDR topic.

Ammann then tackles RIP and RIP2, OSPF, BGP, IGRP and EIRGP protocols and each are broken down and explained very well. This is the first book I have seen that actually breaks down IPX Addressing with any clarity. Along with IPX addressing is NLSP, IPXWAN and IPX traffic coverage making a complete sweep of the protocol. Ammann again amazes me with his 100 pages on the AppleTalk Protocol and his explanations are extremely complete, yet easy enough to comprehend.

There is also discussion on the following topics, X.25, frame relay, ATM, ISDN and DDR. Finally the author gives you 55 pages on bridging and bridging concepts. Written by a CCNA, this book covers far more than the basic CCAN topics and should be used in Cisco certification exam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic Router Configuration, August 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
This book will provide sample scenarios for novices using the Cisco IOS for configuration, operation, and maintenance of internetworking devices. The book will focus on the three most popular networking protocols used today: TCP/IP, IPX, and AppleTalk. This book covers the commonly used IOS commands and the most popular options, making clear the use of the IOS for a variety of users and internetworking configuration.

1.0 out of 5 stars Review carefully before buying, May 30, 2000

This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
I was shopping for Long's highly acclaimed Cisco Intntwk. and Tbst. when I came across this book. I would like to urge the reader to review the content carefully before you buy it. The author spend the first 90 pages on introductory stuff like OSI, LAN, WAN, switch, hub, before talking about Cisco router configuration. The content is not particularly outstanding - and there is no mention of OSPF - not even in the index! The choice and arrangement of topics puzzle me - it does not look like he is organising the books in terms of OSI layer. It also has a chapter on IPXWAN - certainly not the most popular topic among other authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Work! Good For Novice, July 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
This book is very well written and is better than ICRC book by Laura Chappel. It fills in many of the areas not covered in the ICRC book and also provides easy to understand intros into more complex routing subjects, such as BGP, distribute-lists, etc. If you want to learn more about Cisco routing, not just do the minimum to pass the CCNA, this book is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for multi-protocol, July 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
Our company uses IPX and Appletalk for various departments although we are moving with haste to an all IP shop. I found this book to help me with building a multiprotocol network and to better understand the details of IP routing. The book covered IP routing in depth and covered enough of IPX and Appletalk to help me optimize my network. I found the example network with the full IOS configuration files quite useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written, July 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
Who would have thought that this book could be so comprehensive? This book is a perfect place to start for MCSE's who want to move onto the 'good stuff' - routing with Cisco routers. Use this and the Sybex CCNA Study guide and you'll get through the test no problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Thank "Cisco Router Handbook" by George C. Sackett, July 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router Internetworking (Paperback)
Unlike George C. Sackett's book which should have been an excellent resource, this book accomplishes what George didn't.

My son attends a Cisco Network Academy at his high school. If you've ever seen the course material, it's like reading a Novell manual. I had bought Sackett's "Cisco Router Handbook" hoping it would help my son in his studies. In the end, the Sackett's book made a very good door stop and bug killer.

This "Cisco Router Internetworking" has been very helpful. My son refers to it as the "Hooked on Phonics" of Cisco books. You may wonder how the book was laid out, BUT the author does a wonder job speaking plain english and consistenly uses simple examples to get a point across. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to use this book.

As other readers have commented on the chapters of TCP/IP, I will say that these wonderfully done and illustrated. They make an excellent teaching guide alone.

For teenagers who are interested in networking, this is a good place to start.
