The title is very misleading,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
This book should be called routing protocol overview. There isn't any detailed information on any one protocol. This is a good summary of the protocols, but not a good technical reference for OSPF. Also, there are dozens of errors throughout the book.

Good book.....BUT NOT FOR OSPF !!!,

First of all whoever siad that this book is an excellent reference for CCIE preperation is MAD. This book is a disgrace. It is obvious that the author did not spend any time with this project. If you would like to learn OSPF and OSPF for Cisco here are some books you need.1. Routing in the Internet - Christian Huitema 2. OSPF - Anatomy of an Internet Routing Protocol John Moy 3. OSPF Network Design Solutions - Thomas M. Thomas II This book is not for anyone looking to elevate their knowledge of OSPF !

Should Be Retitled "Intro to Assorted Routing Protocol",
This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book knowing that there was a minimal amount of OSPF, but hoping it would provide decent CCIE Prep. Don't Bet On It! This is NOT an advanced book by any stretch. If I had to use one word to summarize this book, it would be FLUFF! Advanced students don't waste your time on this book. Beginning students, there are better books available for you to purchase.

For those of you who feel comfortable with Cisco Documentation books, this book might help, or I suggest you to skip this book.

Good Intro - Too many Typo's, Buyer beware.,
By salesposito@earthlink.net (Lockport, IL (SW Suburban Chicago)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
Overall I felt this book provided many good and well structured examples of an OSPF designed network. However, it became apparent immediately within the first few chapters that typo's abound. This may or may not be an issue for a person already familiar with OSPF and TCP/IP, but for those readers who are trying to acquire first hand knowledge of OSPF I would pass on this book until the reader was able to correctly identify, confirm and read through such inaccuracies. Too much time is wasted re-reading the text to determine if the reader "misunderstood" the text or if the text is inaccurate. Many of the inaccuracies are within the beginning chapters, including the diagrams and pictorials themselves. With these inaccuracies fixed and "proofread" this COULD be a first rate book. I find it very hard to believe that Cisco put their signature on this book. The Author did an excellent job of defining the scope and complexity of OSPF, but needs to provide a "concise and accurate" manual. As with most technical publications, books such as these end up being used as reference material. Therefore, a single mistake cannot be tolerated. It is NOT of the caliber of even the most basic Cisco Press training products (which serve double duty as first time reading material and future reference manuals). Buyer beware.

Not focused on OSPF,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
You may imagine that you're getting a 340 page book on Cisco's OSPF implementation, but the book devotes many, many pages to everything under the sun, from ACLs to RIP, EIGRP, even IGRP! Why IGRP? Why on Earth? Try Moy's "OSPF Anatomy of an Internet Routing Protocol" for a better and tightly focused presentation. OSPF needs 340 pages, easily, but gets short shrift in this book. Avoid.

Big disappointment,

As others have noted, the book is not a solid OSPF technical reference. There's lots of introductory networking info in here.
The book is also absolutely FULL of errors. Figures and text that disagree, sample path cost calculations that are wrong, and on and on. I found myself keeping track of which I saw more of in each chapter: errors or pages. Oh, and for OSPF... Right off the bat the author launches into a bit-by-bit (literally) examination of all the different packets an OSPF process might generate. It was absolutely maddening to read the details of how OSPF accomplishes something without first getting an overview of WHAT was being accomplished. sigh. This is my first amazon review, written explicitly because of how frustrated I am with this book.

A decent refresher book,

This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
The book is old and I had it for awhile. Bought it for an OSPF conversion that never happened. Years later at a new company, OSPF will be implemented . I had found I had forgotten a few things simply because I didn't use them.
The book is an easy read and the title can be misleading as it suggests OSPF design. There are refresher chapters for basic networking. There are chapters about RIP, IGMP, OSPF, and frame relay and ISDN. I don't know how much it will prepare you for the tests but I think its rather basic in it's approach. There are some advanced chapters but they were not that hard. As a howto? It's ok at the basic level and if you are dealing with a Cisco only network. You do get examples but they are a little dated with the new IOS. If you want to get cisco and say a juniper box going, well, it will take care of the cisco side. Then again, this was targeted for the certifications so the comment is not really fair. I am happy with it, typos and all. I don't know how long it will remain on the shelfs but for not it does.

OSPF overview,

great addition to any CCNP study guides as they tend to skimp over the technical details. This book fills in a lot of the details and helps make it all click.

If you want an in-depth OSPF book, do NOT get this.,
This review is from: Cisco Router OSPF: Design & Implementaton Guide (Paperback)
This book is a nice reference to get a general overview of various routing protocols, but I don't know how it made it past the publisher with that title. I was expecting to get a very detailed OSPF book, but instead you only get a few chapters actually covering the protocol listed on the cover of this book.
