Book Description

Expert's Voice in Cisco December 31, 2008

Cisco CLI for Small Business is a blissfully short and to-the-point book addressing a niche that no other book on Cisco quite covers: the needs of the small business wanting to connect to the Internet through Cisco’s 800 Series routers, something more robust than a home or personal use router. Written for the power-user-support-person so typically found in small business, the book shows how to perform many tasks relevant to the small business, tasks such as connecting via cable modem or DSL, creating virtual private networks between two locations, backing up and restoring router configuration, and shielding email servers from outside attack. Cisco CLI for Small Business is the only book on the market to so succinctly and accurately target the needs of the small business wanting to secure their network connectivity using Cisco products.

About the Author

Jason Neumann started his career in the early 80's when he was still in high school. The IBM PC had not yet been invented and the spreadsheet was still a foreign concept to most people. He began by learning the C/PM and M/PM Operating Systems. They are the long outdated predecessors to MSDOS and Windows.

Later, Jason became interested in hardware and worked performing component level repairs on PC hardware. Back then it was still viable to repair rather than replace hardware. At that same time he began to develop an interest in AT&T's UNIX Operating System. It was one of the few true, multi-user, multi-tasking operating systems in those days.

In 1990 when Local Area Networking was just getting started, Jason changed his focus and began learning the Novell NetWare Operating System. In 1991 he became one of the first Novell CNEs in the state of Alaska. He has since followed the trends of the industry and added the necessary credentials to ensure a high quality of networking expertise for his clients.

Jason’s CISCO and other networking credentials include:

CNA - Certified Novell Administrator (NetWare 3, 4 and 5)

CNE - Certified Novell Engineer (NetWare 3, 4, and 5)

MCP - Microsoft Certified Professional (WindowsNT/Windows Server 2003)

MCP+I - Microsoft Certified Professional + Internet (WindowsNT)

MCSA - Microsoft Certified System Administrator (Windows Server 2003)

MCSE - Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (WindowsNT)

CCNA - Cisco Certified Network Associate (since 1998)

Security+ CompTIA Security Plus (2007)

Microsoft Small Business Specialist (SBS 2003)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to get started, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Cisco Routers for the Small Business: A Practical Guide for IT Professionals (Expert's Voice in Cisco) (Paperback)
IT in a small business often means wearing a lot of hats. For the IT person who is in weak in networking but wants to do things right, this book presents a great opportunity to learn a lot of great things with a step by step guide.

Solid book with very thorough coverage for the series 800 equipment.

This is not a CCNA prep book, with more focus on practical use but I think it will still help with the CCNA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cisco Configuration for Non-Techies, May 15, 2009

First, a disclaimer: the author works part-time for me. I think pretty highly of his computer, network and programming skills.

Second, I'm possibly a bit more sophisticated about networks than your average non-IT tech, and have actually successfully configured routers before reading this book.

But that said, I sure wish I'd had Neumann's book when I set up my Cicso router. He writes clearly, works in small, manageable steps, and avoids unnecessary jargon. You can't escape jargon. But he makes it manageable: for example, he describes an RJ-45 connecter as a "fat phone connector." He takes care to define the abbreviations before he uses them.

And through those small, manageable steps he coaxes the reader through some pretty sophisticated Cisco configurations, including lost password recovery (yes, I had) and archiving your configuration files.

This is a valuable tutorial and a valuable reference, with a nice set of appendices. Strongly recommended for those whose lives involve Cisco routers.
