From the Manufacturer

Simple. Easy. Efficient. The Cisco SF 100-24 24-Port 10/100 Switch, a Cisco Small Business Unmanaged Switch, offers the performance and ease of use you need to connect your business. It’s extremely easy to deploy the switch into a new or preexisting network configuration, giving you a quick path for connecting up to 24 individual devices with wired, Fast Ethernet speeds. Increase the size of your network by adding on new computers or access points, or expand the reach of your servers and network-attached-storage to remote locations in your business.

24 Fast Ethernet ports on the front of the switch deliver the connectivity and stability that your small business needs demand.

The Cisco SF 100-24 24-port 10/100 Switch avoids complicated installation procedures or technical configurations: It simply works.

Uncomplicated Installation
Because it works straight out-of-the-box, requiring no additional software, the switch allows employees of all technical abilities to successfully integrate it into a typical small business network. Transferring files and sharing multimedia elements between devices becomes a reliable, smooth experience for systems connected via the 24-port switch. In addition, integrated Quality-of-Service (QoS) control mechanisms improve the transfer quality of essential network information—such as video teleconferencing or voice-based transmissions—without sacrificing your business’s ability to perform typical network functions.

Automatic Adjustments
In addition to its automated Quality of Service functionality, the Cisco SF 100-24 24-Port 10/100 Switch comes provisioned for auto-switching Ethernet capability. This allows the switch to automatically sense the speeds of connected network devices and deliver a traditional Ethernet or Fast Ethernet connection, depending on the compatibility needs of legacy products. Similarly, automated MDI and MDI-X cable detection eliminates the need for crossover cables when using the switch. Installations run smoother when integrating the switch into an older network architecture that relies on a mix of uplink ports and regular hubs to make connections between devices; you can use either standard, straight-through Ethernet cables, or crossover cabling to connect devices to the switch.

Quality-of-Service controls ensure that your business's critical network traffic runs high-priority overtop your normal network operations.

Rackmount or Desktop Installation
The Cisco SF 100-24 24-Port 10/100 Switch includes a rackmount kit that allows you to deploy the switch to an available space in your preexisting IT environment. Because that’s not always an option for a traditional small business, the switch is compact enough to fit on an average desktop. For the small business with limited space, this is an excellent way to build increased network functionality into your business without having to deal with messy infrastructure modifications or complicated installation routines.

Quick Network Troubleshooting
Another benefit to locating the switch in an easily accessible environment is that the lights on the front of the device correspond to the network status of the 24 available ports. A visual analysis of your network activity allows you to quickly assess situations that might need troubleshooting, including inoperable devices or sudden outages from a specific device or cluster of systems. The switch also comes with a limited lifetime warranty that gives you peace-of-mind assurance and helps prevent costly downtime for your business’s key operations.

Features include:

  • 24 ports of Fast Ethernet (10/100) connectivity deliver excellent performance for high-bandwidth voice, video, and wireless applications
  • Quality-of-Service features help preserve your network bandwidth while providing clarity and reliability for your critical network applications
  • Automatic MDI/MDI-X cable detection adjusts for different cable types currently in use on your network
  • Automatic speed and full- and half-duplex sensing ensures that connected devices are running at the right network speed
  • Supports rack-mounting, yet is also compact enough to sit on a typical desktop
  • Limited lifetime warranty

5.0 out of 5 stars Silent and simple gigabit workgroup switch, September 15, 2010

Cisco's marketing department royally screwed up naming this product. They chose a model number (SR2016T) that is one character away from another product (SR2016), which was so horribly panned by customers that it was pulled from the market. They should have just used the part number (SG 100-16) and left it at that. To be clear, this switch bears NO relation whatsoever to the Linksys SR2016 switch. The 24 port models are different as well.

My specific need was for a 16+ port gigabit switch that is quiet (silent if possible) and that will last a long time, running 24x7, completely neglected in a dusty closet. This unit is fanless, delivering on the quiet part, and also making it less likely to suffer from dust build up that can lead to overheating. I can't say yet how well it will hold up over the long term, but I'm not too worried since it comes with a lifetime warranty too.

So far I have had zero issues. Every device that was working on the original switch (an SMC8624 that is being re-tasked) immediately came up at 1Gb on the new switch. Recommended.

Note: the product literature is unclear and sometimes contradictory, but the 16 port model has an internal power supply (no wall wart) and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice when you need more unmanaged ports, October 14, 2010

This 16 port gigabit switch is nice for small installations or home use where you want some speed but don't require port management. It comes extenders to support rack mounting or could be wall mounted also.

My main suggestion for a change in this product would be to put the "gigabit" LED for each port somewhere better. As it is now, the green connectivity/activity light is on the top left of each port and the green gigabit indicator is on the top right. When you're trying to look quickly at status, that puts the gigabit light right next to the connectivity light for the next port over.

The core features are good for an unmanaged switch. All ports detect crossover cables, support QoS tags, and the switch supports jumbo frames. It has no fan so it is quiet and needs appropriate climate control and ventilation. It also supposedly support "green" energy efficient technology but there were no details to explain that - just a marketing-speak type of statement. this switch does not deliver Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) on any ports. If you're looking for PoE, there is at least one other manufacturer who delivers PoE on 4 ports in an 8 port switch. Someone probably offers some powered ports in a 16 or 24 port size if you need that feature, but expect a bigger power supply and probably cooling fans.

It's good to see prices for 16 and 24 port switches are coming down. Hopefully the price of switches with management features will come down further also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cisco Switch, July 4, 2010

This Cisco Switch replaced a Linksys Ethernet II 24 port switch that was 7 years old and just starting to go bad. It came packed good, very simple interface, we had it up and running in around 3 minutes. From the very start all the computer systems were recognized, and we were back to work in a small office environment. I highly recommend this unit, it's an excellent choice to upgrade from the normal home switch to something that is manufactured for small business with a reasonable price tag. I will be looking into their wireless routers to see where we can go from there.
