I connected the router successfully without any problems, but as soon as I started testing the wifi speed on a laptop and kindle fire I realized that the speed was very slow - e.g. 100-250kpbs downloading and a bit faster uploading. Luckily I found the answer quickly via google on the cisco support forums. The solution is to disable WMM (Applications & Gaming > QoS > WMM Support).
How disappointing to have to deal with such a problem for a new router.

UPDATE:
Make sure you update the firmware to the latest version. Try this first before changing any settings. Most likely you won't need to apply the trick I've described above.

Definitely an upgrade from my old router I bought about 6 years ago. Speed is up 30%, connection is better, jitter and packet loss is virtually nonexistent, and haven't yet had an unexpected disconnection. Also, this router gives you lots of options for limiting certain types of traffic and prioritizing tasks (of which I haven't yet fully explored). I'm not someone who has tested lots of routers, but I can say I'm pleasantly surprised and happy to only pay $32 for my factory refurbished model.

One Con, and it's minor in my opinion: The setup program that came on the CD with the router did not work for me. It could not discover the router for whatever reason (even though my computer could see it), so I was unable to use the setup program. Luckily, the native Windows 7 setup worked like a breeze and I am able to modify the router's settings by going to[...] (this is probably the better and faster way to set it up anyways).

Sept 2014 update:
Bumped score to four stars

Feb 2013 update:

Finally got around to setting up the third of three E1500s I purchased a good while ago (this one for the in-laws, so I waited until I was confident this router was worth trying again).

Went through my usual setup: tossed the disc aside, hit up 192.168.1.1 in the browser (dismissing the prompts to allow me to connect to the unsecured box), flashed firmware to v1.0.05, changed admin password with a strong key, changed SSID, changed router name, disabled UPnP, set wireless to N-only @ 20MHz, auto channel selected, established WPA2-Personal with a strong key, and disabled WPS. No fuss, no sequenced rebooting of modem and router numerous times- just quick and simple (your mileage may vary, depending on ISP and modem).

It seems there's no longer a "WMM problem", so there's probably no need to fiddle with the WMM setting.

According to a list online titled "WPS Vulnerability status update for Linksys devices", article ID "25154", the new firmware feature provided by Cisco to disable WPS should eliminate exposure to WPS hacks (I did not take the time to test with an actual hack). I like this very, very much. Few manufacturers have gone back and patched up their firmware for this vulnerability. Kudos.

Now, if this router performs the way I know it *can*, I'll consider it a terrific buy. IPv6 support, ability to disable WPS, slick and discreet form factor without annoying lights, excellent wireless range and stability, and no more WMM issues? THIS IS THE LINKSYS WE USED TO KNOW. That statement no longer means much as Belkin is destined to acquire Linksys from Cisco.

The E1500 refurb router is working great so far. I would rate it a 5, if it were not that the Cisco install disc had serious bugs. After wrestling with it awhile, I went to the Cisco support site and downloaded the install software from there (see #2 below.)

These install steps are for a PC, and may not be the same for a Mac:

1. Be sure your current modem and connection to DSL are on and working.
2. Find the Cisco Connect download on the Cisco site for router E1500. Select the lowest 'version' for the router.
4. Download Cisco Connect Setup Software to your Desktop. (Ignore the firmware options.)
5. On your Desktop, click on the download to run it.
6. When the software advises you to connect the blue Ethernet cord: if your modem is currently connected to your PC via an Ethernet cord (probably yellow), you will disconnect that cord from the PC and from the modem.
7. Then connect the new blue Ethernet cord to the modem and to the router. So your PC is no longer connected to the modem - it's wireless!
8. At a later time, to view or change router settings: Click on Start / Programs / Cisco Connect
9. Optional: in Cisco Connect, select advanced options and select Mac Address Clone. (This has nothing to do with the Mac computer. It just refers to an internal address in your PC.) Click Enabled, and then click Clone my PC's Mac. Then click Save. Why do this? Some ISPs charge more for a multi-PC connection and/or use of a router. The cloning lets your ISP think you only have their modem, not a third party router.
10. If your printer is wireless, you may have to rerun its setup CD to print from the new connection.

11. Update: After a great install day, the next day nothing worked - either it was slow or I would lose the connection.
