4.0 out of 5 stars I for one love Cissy Houston
I'm sorry the Whitney kids are put out by this, but as for me, I'm pleasantly surprised by the talents of her mother. I've always known her as Aretha Franklin's back up singer, and as a gospel singer, but am enjoying listening to Cissy Houston as a pop singer! Whitney and I are close to the same age and so we were teenagers during the disco era, and I'm used to the very...

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame
Like the other review says, this cd is deceptive but i also think it is a shame too.... The reason i say this is that it has got some really good tracks on it, the upbeat/disco songs are cool and should have been hits in the late 70's/early 80's. The biggest disappointment though is that you never hear Whitney and she would have sounded awesome on tracks like 'think it...

I'm sorry the Whitney kids are put out by this, but as for me, I'm pleasantly surprised by the talents of her mother. I've always known her as Aretha Franklin's back up singer, and as a gospel singer, but am enjoying listening to Cissy Houston as a pop singer! Whitney and I are close to the same age and so we were teenagers during the disco era, and I'm used to the very danceable sound. It's a 70s record!

Cissy's voice is an earthier version of her daughter's, and to my ears it's more pleasant. There is an exquisite song, "After You", made famous by her niece, Dionne Warwick. I also love the song "Love Don't Hurt People", and "Warning, Danger" kind of has that "Burn, Baby Burn" groove that's fun to dance to! This whole album gives me a whole new perspective on Cissy's career that I hadn't realized. She's kind of stayed in the shadows, either as a background singer, or as the mother of Whitney, or as the aunt of Dionne. She should have come out front more, I think. Going to get to hear her again this spring in Tyler Perry's new film!

In my opinion, this really isn't a bad record if you give it a chance. Or, maybe it takes an older person to appreciate it.

Buy if u like some good, Loletta Holloway/Jocelyn Brown style disco, not if u wanna hear Whitney.

This is a Cissy album with Whitney maybe chiming in on back-up, though you can't tell. The tracks listed here are the same as the ones on A FAMILY AFFAIR, which also falsely implies that Whitney is an equal presence on the album. If you are looking for a Whitney album, skip this.
